Here's a much more detailed report on the import: Regulations.gov
Also, I was browsing the website and came across this permit that Point Defiance applied for and on page 10 of the pdf it includes an interesting chunk of info on North American Asian elephant TAG management. Here are some things I thought were quite interesting from it:
"The TAG and SSP recommend 16 females for breeding with specific males and 12 females to breed via AI (all reproductively viable females have been recommended to breed in an effort to boost the reproductive rate)."
"The TAG and SSP recommend three transfers at this time. Three males are currently available for transfer. The TAG and SSP recommend that all male elephants eight years of age and older be trained and available for semen collection."
"The TAG and SSP encourage institutions to reduce interbirth intervals in order to maximize the overall birthrate for this population. Reducing the interbirth interval may be accomplished by breeding recent dams once they begin cycling again. The TAG and SSP encourage institutions to recruit additional breeding animals into the AZA Elephant TAG/SSP managed population."
I wonder which females are recommended to breed via AI, 12 seems like a lot. Also, I'm very interested to know which bulls are recommended to transfer and if it has indeed been planned to transferred them (yet).
