North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

Here's a much more detailed report on the import: Regulations.gov

Also, I was browsing the website and came across this permit that Point Defiance applied for and on page 10 of the pdf it includes an interesting chunk of info on North American Asian elephant TAG management. Here are some things I thought were quite interesting from it:

"The TAG and SSP recommend 16 females for breeding with specific males and 12 females to breed via AI (all reproductively viable females have been recommended to breed in an effort to boost the reproductive rate)."

"The TAG and SSP recommend three transfers at this time. Three males are currently available for transfer. The TAG and SSP recommend that all male elephants eight years of age and older be trained and available for semen collection."

"The TAG and SSP encourage institutions to reduce interbirth intervals in order to maximize the overall birthrate for this population. Reducing the interbirth interval may be accomplished by breeding recent dams once they begin cycling again. The TAG and SSP encourage institutions to recruit additional breeding animals into the AZA Elephant TAG/SSP managed population."

I wonder which females are recommended to breed via AI, 12 seems like a lot. Also, I'm very interested to know which bulls are recommended to transfer and if it has indeed been planned to transferred them (yet).

My guesses for the twelve females are Phoebe, Chandra, Rudy, Emily, Maliha, Jade, Sundara, and later Priya, Nellie, Belle, Jazmine, and Hannah

For the bulls I could see Raja (To Rosamond to breed with Mali and hopefully Kirina) Doc (To St.Louis to breed with Rani, Maliha, Jade, and Priya) Indy to Columbus (To mate with Phoebe, Rudy and Sundara

Bulls that I believe could be transferred to other facilities are
  • Sneezy ( To Oklahoma to mate with Asha and Chandra)
  • Rex (To Albuquerque to mate with Rozana and later Jazmine)
  • Tommy (To the African Lion Safari to mate with Lilly, Natasha, Opal, and Emily)
  • Obert (To White Oak to mate with Alana, Mable and Piper)
  • Romeo (To White Oak to mate with Mala, Sally, Icky, Bonnie, Shirley, Angelica, Sara, Asha, Aree, and April)
  • Tucker (To Fort Worth to mate with Bluebonnet, and Belle)
  • Ongard (To Houston to mate with Tupelo and later Joy, Tilly, and Winnie)
  • Baylor (To African Lion Safari to mate with Nellie, Hannah, and later Gigi, Anna May, Rose, Sunita, Luna, Imke and three other female calves)

Indy is post-reproductive so he can not reproduce. I highly doubt that Doc would go to St. Louis and Obert would go to White Oak though.

The zoo's application is from 2020 and likely the information above from 2019. The information is certainly interesting, but it may be out of date already.

You're probably right. Especially with the pandemic, things most likely got delayed if not changed or cancelled. However, now that things are slowly starting to get back on track I think we expect at least some of these planned items such as the transfers to start coming to fruition soon.

I think I know when African Lion Safari Park will announce the birth of their three new calves somewhere around November to January let's just call it a hunch

Does any one now when the rest of the herd at the Center For Elephant Conservation will arrive and if they are planning to use Casey to mate with Charlies daughters and Charlie to mate with the other adult females like Mala, Sally, Alana, Icky, Bonnie and Shirley or planning to bring a new bull to mate with all of the herds females that are still of breeding age

From the Tacoma application:
The TAG and SSP recommend three transfers at this time. Three males are currently available for transfer (studbook numbers: 27, 514, and 516). The date of the document is 2017.

27: "Butch"
514: "Samson"
516: "Albert"

The actually name for Butch is Indy Butch he is the sire of Emmet, Kirina, Rani, Mali, and 6 other calves his first was a male stillborn in 1990 born to Babe who died in the birthing process, Emmet was born to Romani in 1991 he was sent to Whipsnade zoo to be their breeding bull, Kumari was born to the late Shanti in 1993, Kirina was born to Romani in 1995, Rani was born to Eillie in 1996, Mali in 1997 to Targa, Priya in 2000 to Romani but she suffered the same fate as her half sister Kumari and nephews Batu and Ajay they all died due to EEHV, a female stillborn born to Targa in 2001, Keder born to Targa in 2005 but died the same year, and another stillborn born to Romani in 2006

Samson was born at the African Lion Safari to Kitty and Calvin, and Albert was born at the African Lion Safari to Lilly and Calvin

And since Samson was moved already, does that mean that Albert and Indy are still up for transfer. I understand Albert, but I wonder where Indy would go. Maybe he could replace Albert in ABQ? I’m sure Albert could go to White Oak.

Indy could go to Albuquerque, another facility he could go to is Columbus

Do you think they have enough room for three breeding females and three breeding males + calves? Genetically he’s be perfect but I feel like they would need to move Hank and/or Beco.

2017?! That's a while ago, I doubt Albert is going anywhere then. I think they were saying either Albert or Samson could be transferred and ABQ chose Samson to be moved to Oregon. As for Indy, I dont think he's going anywhere either as he's getting up there in age for a transfer and Dickerson is home to young bull Hugo so it's possible Dickerson is hoping to import some cows to start a breeding program similar to OKC with Rex and Kandula.

ABQ should be brining in a new bull anyway for Rozie and Jazmine as Albert is Jazmine’s uncle, so I could totally see them moving Albert. You’re right about Indy though, it’s much less likely. I wonder if Dickerson even has enough barn space for new females though. They’ve got 4 adults already and Indy and Patience are both in their late 40’s so I’m skeptical of them bringing in new girls.

And isn't the White Oak Conservation Center planning to move Vance, and Casey both bull's older than Indy

Apparently Bluebonnet got impregnated naturally though it's not known weather Romeo or Colonel Tusk is the sire

My guess is Romeo, he’s a proven breeder while Colonel is not. Romeo is also more genetically valuable than Colonel and has been mixed with the girls a lot. Also, do you mind sharing your source for this? I always thought Bluebonnet was afraid of bulls so I would be very interested to see if that was no longer true.
