Gulf Breeze Zoo Gulf Breeze Zoo

I think this makes Gulf Breeze only the second zoo in the US (after San Diego) to hold both river and pygmy hippos, right?

Gulf Breeze Zoo officially have six Pygmy Hippos! Two males and four females have arrived from zoos in Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and Switzerland. Two of the hippos (Queyah and Qiu Hsiang) are now on display for visitors while the other four (Zhu Chang, Sirana, Ayana and Abin) are off-display.

I doubt it, they are not AZA accredited, they are ZAA.

They have swapped hippos with a few AZA-accredited facilities in the past, though. Now they have the Maned Wolves as well. They may, like nczoofan said, be surplus animals that have been moved to other facilities. I believe the AZA does an advanced inspection of non-AZA facilities to make sure that they are a safe place for the animals to be transferred to, but I may be mistaken. I do not know if Gulf Breeze Zoo is a good facility or not.

As EsserWarrior said, non-AZA zoos can participate in SSPs as sustainability partners. Eric Mogensen (Gulf Breeze's owner) hasn't shown too much interest in working with AZA facilities in the past (ironic, because his eldest daughter used to work for AZA), but maybe that's changing. There certainly are some species which are hard to get outside of AZA, maned wolves being one prime example.

Good point, I have not been there for quite some time (like 15 years), but it left a lot to be desired at the time. I can see why they opted to go the non-AZA route. I have certainly been to worse places since though, they are, as far as non-AZA goes, probably one of the better places in that regard.

A female orangutan infant named Isadora was born at the zoo on September 11th, 2021 to mom Indah and dad Louie. She is currently being hand-raised since first time mom Indah wasn’t properly caring for her newborn. The press release did not mention whether they are Sumatran or Bornean orangutans so I’m assuming they are hybrids since Gulf Breeze isn’t AZA anyway.

The Gulf Breeze Zoo is excited to announce the recent birth of a male orangutan named Satu born January 20 to mom, Sara, and dad, Louie.

Satu marks the second orangutan birth at the Zoo in less than six months. The baby is doing exceptionally well under the gentle care of his experienced mom. He and Sara can often be viewed from the boardwalk overlooking the orangutan island.
