Lincoln Children's Zoo Lincoln Childrens Zoo News

The zoo has sadly announced that all 3 snow leopards have passed away from COVID-19 complications. Rest in peace, Ranney, Everest and Makalu.

Three Snow Leopards at Lincoln Children’s Zoo die from COVID-19 complications

How old were these 3 snow leopards?

It is indeed highly conserning that 3 out of 3 animals of the species have not survived this infection.

Do we know about any zoo snow leopard at other zoo that survived covid? I can´t think of any infected in Europe but here most zoos keep mums.

Everest and Ranney were born in 2013. I do not know how old Makalu was as I only have notes on two snow leopards at the zoo (unless they had a cub). However, if it's the Makalu who was at Chahinkapa Zoo (if he moved here) then he'd be 11 years old. The only other Makalu I have notes on was at Bramble Park Zoo.

Nonetheless, its very tragic to lose all three at the same time under such circumstances.

The details of the first two are:

Ranney (May 26, 2013) Amga x Maya
Everest (June 13, 2013) Sabu x Sarani

There was also a Snow leopard named Makalu born at Dudley Zoo April 17, 2014 - though he was sent to Darjeeling Zoo in 2016.

In the US, the first snow leopards infected with COVID-19 were at the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky in December 2020. All 3 (Meru, NeeCee and Kimti) survived.

In July 2021, Ramil and Naphisa at the San Diego Zoo in California were infected. Both survived.

The USDA website shows that 2 snow leopards at Brookfield Zoo in Illinois tested positive in October 2021.

2 snow leopards at Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota tested positive in October 2021. One of those, Baya, died. She was only about 2 1/2 years old.

On November 11, the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri announced that 2 snow leopards tested positive. They are a 17 year old male and a 13 year old female.

Thanks to all for this info. So those 3 were not so much elderly. And nice to see that some have survived it, but still 4 deaths seem worryingly high.

Has anyone seen the Sumatran tigers out on exhibit since the COVID-19 announcement last month? With the recent announcement of the death of the snow leopards, I'm curious how the tiger boys are doing. I watched them grow up in San Diego.

Has anyone been to this zoo in recent years? Do they still have any bats on exhibit?
