North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

Columbus likely won’t be announcing any potential pregnancy till months before the due date like they have done with Phoebe. From videos, Rudy and Sunny definitely don’t seem to be showing enough mammary development to be due in a couple months. The earliest I would say we could expect calves from them is probably the second half of 2022. As for Rose-tu, it’s probably only a matter of time before Oregon announces pregnancy or maybe even a birth. I haven’t seen many recent videos/photos of her but I’m confident Samson can get the job done, he will most likely be the father as the main purpose of his transfer to Oregon was to breed with Rose. It would be interesting and great actually if they AI her though, considering how un-valuable (genetically speaking) he is especially since Rose is so valuable. My only concern is that it’s been 9 years since she last gave birth which is a rather long birthing interval. Anyways, I’ve been told by some people that 2022 will be a good year for Asian elephant births so that’s good.

Phoebe has had five calves with four still alive. The ones that are still alive are George at African Lion Safari, Bohdi at the Denver Zoo, Beco at the Columbus Zoo, and Frankie at Columbus. Ellie who was born in 2018 has passed away.

Thank you for the correction. So close yet so far!

I’ve heard that numerous times now too. Let’s hope that’s true! And that makes sense for both Rose Tu in Oregon and Rudy and Sunny at Columbus

Zoos lie. They're nontransparent when they feel they need to be. I've had a friend ask if an animal was pregnant and she was confidently told "no, but we hope she will be some day!" while she was at that very moment in holding awaiting the very near birth of her first calf. Some zoos don't want pregnancies revealed at all until the offspring are on the ground and have had some time to stabilize (see: Fort Worth for a recent and relevant example). It's one way to avoid bad press although I've typically seen with zoos that practice transparency, the public tends to be very sympathetic and understanding of losses.

that does make sense. Guess there’s no point in emailing Columbus Zoo about it. It’s a wait and see opportunity I suppose

Definitely email them if you'd like! I've had a lot of success getting information by utilizing email and social media. Sometimes you get lucky and get the right team member who's a little more willing to being open than most. :D

Worth a try, regardless.

Im still learning everyday with the North American Asian and African elephant population in North America. For instance I had no idea about the current situation with African Elephants and how hardly none of them are breeding and what a disaster it’s been. There’s currently only 2 African elephants that are pregnant and both are at Omaha. The Asian Elephant population in North America has now gotten a lot better. Granite we’re still not out of the woods but this year there’s been 4 elephant calves born in the Untied States (one of them born to a first time mom!). And we have another calf due next year to Asha and I keep hearing Rose Tu at the Oregon Zoo is pregnant (truly hoping the father isn’t Sampson). But see I didn’t even know there were certain elephants that we DIDNT want breeding until these threads. I didn’t know about the severity of EEHV until this threads. You learn stuff everyday is all I’m saying and I agree they deserve a pat on the back or something.
Actually several calves have been born this year 3 males and four females

Yes, it's very likely that Opal, Natasha, and Emily have had calves this year but we still have no official confirmation from ALS. Also how do you know all three of the calves are female?

I have seen multiple video's and I have not seen any indication of male body parts and their behavior is much more akin to females then males usually males of any age will spar with one another, but the calves are much more calm and relaxed

Since there has been a lot of speculation about pregnant cows, here's an update of the list I posted earlier this year:

Current Confirmed Pregnancies:

Asha (OKC), due in Feb 2022

Likely Pregnant but not confirmed:

Rozie (ABQ)
Rose-Tu (Oregon)
Some of the Ringling cows (someone told me that some may be pregnant)

Possibly Pregnant (due sometime next year):

Rudy (Columbus)
Sundara (Columbus)
Jade (STL) (Maybe A.I.)
Maliha (STL) (Maybe A.I.)
Mali (Syracuse)
Val (EAF)

Maybe Pregnant (due in 2023):

Shanti (Houston)
Belle (Fort Worth)
Maharani (Smithsonian)
Jazmine (ABQ) (Maybe A.I.)
Priya (STL) (Maybe A.I.)
Lily (ALS)
Rani (STL)

It would make sense for Ringling to AI or mate them naturally before transfer my guesses would be
  • Bonnie sire Charlie or Casey
  • Angelica sire unknown could be Dahlip, Ongard or Casey
  • Sara sire unknown could be Dahlip, Ongard or Casey
  • Asha sire unknown could be Dahlip, Ongard or Casey
  • Aree sire unknown could be Dahlip, Ongard or Casey
  • Mable sire Charlie or Casey
  • Piper sire Charlie or Casey
Females who stayed at Center for Elephant conservation that could be pregnant (If Their still alive)
  • Alana sire Charlie
  • Icky ll sire Charlie
  • Shirley sire Charlie
Females who stayed at Center for Elephant conservation that could be pregnant unlikely but possible (If Their still alive)
  • Mala sire Charlie
  • Sally sire Charlie

Rosie from Albuquerque is pregnant? She hasn’t had a calf in 3 years and I haven’t heard that one yet!

They are still very young and just because they are calm and stick by mom a lot for now doesn't necessarily mean they are female. Yes, males spar with each other a lot but usually all calves (and babies of many species) stay pretty close to mom and aren't very rambunctious till they are a bit older. Anyways, if you are correct and all three are female that would be very very good for the population and honestly a bit too good to be true. However, at least one bull would be good for the herd considering Onyx is the only bull around his age and often hangs out with George. A bull around his age would be a good social experience for him.

It isn't confirmed but there is a very good chance she is pregnant considering it has been 3 years since she had Thorn. I would expect a calf from her in spring to summer of 2022. The only unusual thing is that they haven't announced pregnancy yet since they usually announce pregnancies over a year before she's due.

It's hard to tell with her since she's actively nursing Thorn so her mammary development doesn't necessarily mean she's pregnant. I'm assuming she's pregnant based off of past patterns of ~4 year birthing intervals.

I’ve heard she’s like that with her breeding patterns so that does make sense

You are very correct and it could all just be wishful thinking, but in my opinion it would wouldn't surprise me if the calves are indeed female considering how many female calves have been born in 2015 three cows were born, but their is always the possibility of at least one of those calves being male
