Harpy's in captivity

I think you will find there is not creatures from Greek mythology in captivity ;)

(Maybe the title should be changed for clarification... :p)

Certainly, an interesting report on the status of harpye in captivity. Surprising to see Brasil with the highest number of captive birds and a good deal of reeding in captivity.
If we think about it it’s more reasonable for them to have the highest captive stock of the species as there is probably significantly less paperwork to have a eagle transported from one point in Brasil to another point over exporting an eagle from Brazil overseas. However the WAZA would benefit from some of the Brazilian birds exported for breeding purposes too.

Interesting article, good to hear Brazil is doing pretty well with them.

Just for reference I'm aware of 8 facilities in the US with Harpies, I think they all still have them.

Dallas Zoo
Dallas World Aquarium
Fort Worth Zoo
Los Angeles Zoo
Natural Encounters Inc.
San Diego Zoo
World Bird Sanctuary
Zoo Miami

Have any of these bred the Harpy ?

Europe has 3 (4 if we include French Guayana) holders of harpy eagles:
Nuremberg
Beauval
Berlin Tierpark
Tierpark seems to be the oldest holder of the 3 remaining, having held them since 1980 and having occasionally bred and acquired specimens from Brazil. Beauval acquired some from Brazil in 2020 for their Equatorial Dome, and Nuremberg has also acquired from the wild. Both the German holders have also received specimens from Wuppertal, which stopped holding them in 2015. According to ZTL, a total of 27 facilities (24 if we don’t count current ones and 28 if we count French Guayana) have held the species. The latest zoo to stop holding the species was Weltvogelpark, which stopped holding the species in 2017.

It was out off the radar but my parents in law saw (and take a picture) one harpy eagle ten year ago in an obscure amusement and animal park in Martinique.

The Harpy pair living in Beauval comes from Brazil, but not from the wild.
They hatched in the breeding centre of Itaipu, that has successfully bred the species for many years.

Just looked at several video's from Martinique and found a small clip of an Harpy kept at Zoo de Martinique. Here a photo taken from this video which was made around 2018 :

Thank you @vogelcommando but I am sure it was not there as my parents in law never visited this zoo (and the aviary was really looking bad). But your discovery is interesting. Harpy eagle are not labelled on their map but it is quite possible as the owners are the same of Zoo de Guyane. We have to investigate more o_O
