North American Eastern Black Rhino Population

I decided to made a document listing all of Cornelius, Elly and Ralph's surviving descendants in North America and it honestly is disappointing how few individuals are unrelated to these 3 lines. I have listed there names, parents, birth years, and generations. For those who aren't familiar with it, if the individual is listed as F1 they are Cornelius, Elly, or Ralph's calf; F2 would be grandcalf; F3 great-grandcalf and so on. Only 16 of the 60 (or ~26%) in North America are unrelated to these 3 rhinos, and of those 16 only 5 are under 20 and a few are excluded from breeding because of vitiligo or other health issues, so only 6 (37.5%) of them have reproduced in the last 5 years. For this reason most of the population is very closely related to each other, for example all 3 of the calves born this year and Andazi's unborn calf due next month are all descendants of Ralph. You can also see how many of the breeding pairs are related (ie Andazi/Johari, Kendi/Aria, Ruka/Zuri, etc). So all in all, an import―of an animal unrelated to Ralph and Elly―from Japan or Europe would be great for the population.

PS: Let me know if the link isn't working!

Cornelius, Elly, and Ralph’s Living Descendants

Amazing job! Yes, as you pointed out, very few are really unrelated (and a good chunk of the European metapopulation descends from the Ralph/Embu side). Also, there are interesting pairing still not breeding in USA, unlikely they will in the future. Letting alone the females, that could be too old, the males could be moved (I am thinking about Kianga and Corky, for example). It is not clear why this has not been done yet.

I always thought that Satsuki and Corky had already past their prime when it came to breeding, but I guess that wasn’t really the case, (until now of course) and it’s also interesting that the two them were more genetically valuable than I originally thought.

Yes, they were/are well past their prime but they were still given a breeding recommendation since they have such valuable genes. Satsuki was imported from Japan and has only a few relatives in the North American population while Corky was born in the US but has valuable genes as he isn’t related to most of the rhinos in the population. If you go back to post #23 you’ll see the 3 most represented rhinos in the population. Corky and Satsuki were one of the few breeding pairs unrelated to all of them.

First off, happy New Year to everyone! Hopefully 2022 will be much better than the last two years but we'll see. Anyways, here's the first of my population list updates for 2022!

2021 has been a good year for the North American Eastern Black Rhino population with 4 births, 4 transfers and 2 new holders! Unfortunately we also lost 2 rhinos, one very old male and one relatively young female.

Four male (4.0) calves have been in the population this year which was a big boost as only one calf was born in 2020. The only downside is the surplus of male calves.

1.0 Ayubu was born on January 20th, 2021 at Lee Richardson Zoo to first time parents 1.0 Jabari and 0.1 Johari.

1.0 Atari was born on February 24th, 2021 at Zoo Miami to experienced parents 1.0 Eddie and 0.1 Circe.

1.0 KJ was born on March 1st, 2021 at Sedgwick County Zoo to first time dad 1.0 Klyde and experienced mom 0.1 Bibi.

1.0 TBD was born on November 10th, 2021 at Little Rock Zoo to first time dad 1.0 Johari and experienced mom 0.1 Johari.

Two rhinos sadly passed away this year within the population, one male and one female.

1.0 Toshi passed away on January 14th, 2021 at the age of 44 at Zoo Miami due to "a variety of ailments related to his old age." He leaves behind a son and a daughter, 3 granddaughters, 3 grandsons, 1 great-granddaughter, and 2 great-great-grandsons in North America.

0.1 Satsuki passed away on December 13th, 2021 at the age of 26 at Honolulu Zoo after she became ill from fluid buildup and infiltrative disease. Unfortunately, she does not leave any direct descendants behind but she was Toshi’s full sister.

Four rhinos were transferred this year, two males and two females. Due to these transfers, the population has gained two extra holders in 2021.

1.0 King was transferred to Oregon Zoo from Brookfield Zoo on September 10th, 2021.

1.0 Jaali and 0.1 Nia were transferred to The Living Desert Zoo on October 20th, 2021 from Potter Park Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, respectively.

0.1 Jozi was transferred to Oregon Zoo from Milwaukee County Zoo in November 2021.

Without further ado, here's the updated list! :)

Though there are no confirmed pregnancies due sometime this year, but we can hope and expect calves from Cleveland, Kansas City, Lincoln Park, Pittsburgh and possibly Blank Park, Busch Gardens, and SDZSP.

2022 will also bring us a new holder as Birmingham will be taking on the species in replacement of white rhino. I do know who will be moving there but won't say for the privacy of the zoos' involved but I will say it will be a young breeding pair.

Assuming Birmingham gets a young pair of Eastern Blacks the most likely candidates seem to be Jaali and Tumani. Both are roughly the ages their parents had them and are extra animals in said exhibits still with their parents.

Wont say publicly as transfer not yet publicised

I could be totally wrong. Just a guess based on the known variables. Birmingham is getting a young pair of Black Rhinos on a breeding recommendation. Those two seem to be the closest to surplus young Eastern Black Rhinos. Unless of course they mix up the known breeding pairs at other zoos. Kesi might be an option as well

Birmingham worked with Eastern Black Rhino (Ricko) before they switched to White Rhino.

They are theoretically young and "not set in their ways" enough you could experiment with mixing them with the young elephants.

Jaali moved to The Living Desert last year for their new Rhino Savanna exhibit. They also received a young female, Nia, for future breeding.

That much I will say: Judging by the layout and planning of the exhibits I do think the zoo will opt for separate digs for the black rhino pair. It is to the left of the Birmingham Elephant Haven habitats.

Yeah they are going where the White Rhinos were at. They are also getting the Hippo space since they aren't replacing Tadpole.

Mixing White Rhino and elephant was only done a few times. Mixing Black Rhino and Elephant is a pipe dream that's never happening.
