Captive Beluga Whales in the U.S. & Canada

Oh my bad I assumed it was Jetta because she was in it for so long but what u said could be correct. If I am correct I believe you were saying that one could have quickly gone into around the clock care and died shortly after as well as Jetta still recovering at the same time

Do u guys think Marineland is at fault for all these whales sicknesses or is Mystic not doing something right? I personally think it’s on Marineland because they most likely carried the sickness with them from Marineland. Hopefully it does not spread to any others especially the ones who were there already

Has it been confirmed it was Havana, then? There was a lot of speculation about which one it was.

There’s been no confirmation yet. Once the NOAA documents get updated it would be made available.
Additionally all the belugas when moved were cleared healthy; this thread on Twitter has more information. https://twitter.com/seasthedreams/status/1492998907118370816?s=21

Personally, and unfortunately, Skyla and Kelowna (Jetta and Havana’s moms) haven’t had the best success with calves :( I wonder if genetics play a role- given that one of Kelowna’s calves prior to Havana passed from a metabolic disorder (likely inherited from Kelowna, as Havana’s dad Andre has several confirmed offspring)

Do think they are spreading the sickness through each other or it’s something in the water?

What I do know is transfers do add stress, and each individual animal is different with adapting. With Havok’s case the transfer caused stress- weakened immune system as a result- return of his pre existing medical issues. Note that both Marineland and Mystic treated him together and postponed the move to ensure he was better.

If it were contagious/in the water; then there would have been concern for Kela and Natasha at Mystic, and the whales at ML. That doesn’t seem to be the case, as it’s GI issues.

There is a rumor circulating on social media that Grayson is no longer at SWF, and may have transferred to Georgia Aquarium. Typically, there is not just a single transfer of a beluga, as the captive population is managed as one pod, I would anticipate additional transfers did or will occur soon. If anyone sees Grayson at Georgia or sees confirmation of any other transfers, please post!

Considering Georgia just sent Orlando Nunavik last year, it's likely it may have been a swap for Grayson. I'm not so sure, but Georgia is really the only option if Grayson did get transferred.

Grayson transferred to Georgia Aquarium on May 7, 2022 (confirmed)

For MLC, I found a visitor report from August 2022 that said they had 32 whales. They were in the Arctic Cove in two pools, 12 in one, 11 in another. Then in Friendship Cove, 9 whales. He didn't see any whales at the show area.

So that's 32 belugas, does anyone know if that's right?

It’s more actually. Given that both Coves have medical pools that have barriers that make those ones off limit to the public. Unfortunately uncertain of numbers
On another note Jetta was introduced to the Mystic pod again
Philip aka Juno lover on Instagram: "Here’s a more detailed post about Jetta, all of the following statements are from various sources including the park themselves and my own time spent there. Jetta was one of the five Belugas who came from MLC in May 2021, she arrived with Sahara, Kharabali, Havana*, and Havok*. The first time I ever saw her was in June of that year and at that point she was still with Sahara, Khara, and Havana* in the back pool of the arctic coast. Havok* was already in the medical pool and passed away a few weeks after. Late summer/early fall of 2021 Jetta and Havana* were moved to Mystics Marine Mammal Aquatic Habitat (MMAH) for medical reasons. Unfortunately Havana* lost the battle with her illness in February 2022. During my visit in December 2021 I was told that they were moved but not why, and when I walked past the MMAH I noticed staff were working there. To my knowledge Jetta started getting better around the spring and it is safe to assume she resumed training and fully recovered before her move back to the arctic coast. As far as I know she has been reintroduced to Khara, Sahara, and Kela and is continuing to do well. Jetta, Mystic Aquarium 9/18/22 : both by me"
