A walkthrough aviary focussed on the evolution of birds would be a fascinating concept, but something that would go way over the heads of both kids and the general public.

They’d be tipping up expecting to see an animatronic T-rex roaring its head off; and if promised a raptor, would expect nothing less than Blue rather than a bird of prey.

Oh, don't be so cynical, @Zoofan15.

Having said that, any animatronic dinosaur walk-through will likely display the connection dinosaurs have to modern animals - for instance, their closest living relatives, birds and crocodiles.

As a father, I can tell you no child will read those signage and information boards unless they ooze slime, dispense candy or have a built in video game. Sorry, cynicism again. :cool:

Agreed. I think most of all, it’s about expectation. If families go to see a touring dinosaur exhibition or a farm with their kids, they (usually) have a good time and enjoy what they’ve gone there for. But the vast majority attend a zoo expecting to see zoo animals.

Of all the 'open' zoos in the UK, I would now place YWP comfortably ahead of Marwell, port Lympne and howletts. I don't think Whipsnade is much better now. YWP just needs to concentrate on its animal collection, it is doing well enough without adding the theme park trash!!

I agree in theory. I initially was worried when I found out about the sea lions, thinking there would be shows. However, although you can see certain behaviours of their past, no sign of shows.
I agree that YWP is now one of the top walkthrough parks. I visited Whipsnade recently and was very sad to see many empty and sparsely populated enclosures. It looked very run down compared to my last visit in 2015. I had a similar experience last year at Marwell and since then they have lost the cheetahs and Amur leopards. On the positive side, I believe they have taken on someone from Chester who is slowly improving things.

It’s a shame to see Marwell has suffered a decline. It’s long had a good reputation, but everyone seems to be of the opinion it’s gone downhill in recent years.

Whipsnade has similarly scaled back on breeding herds etc. Their Southern white rhinoceros herd is a ghost of its former self considering they were once one of the prolific breeders in the world.

I’d agree with both pipaluk YWPfan and zoo fan. As a very regular whipsnade member and a few times a year YWP member I’d say at the moment YWP has the edge on all the big counts that stand out in terms of the animal collection (size and diversity) and park and enclosure infrastructure.

I did think YWP was getting a bit theme park the last time I was there and the new hotel, the slightly strange shopping park thing, dinosaur, lights oddness risks diluting the zoo a bit but on the other hand they are all strong income sources and there’s a clear strategy at work.

I was impressed with the sea lion enclosure and ‘our’ seals looked very happy. And the feeding demo was just training execution which was great as said above. YWP also has a number of ‘wow’ exhibits notably polar bear, giant otter and the lion area and the facilities for the animals more than show the money thats been spent.

I hope whipsnade can get back to the top - it still has some amazing areas and animals and remains great to visit. But it’s place as top ‘nearly a safari’ walkthrough has gone, just in my view of course.

As a weekly visitor to YWP, I am not overly impressed with having to walk through The Hive to and from the car park, which on busy days can be a long way. As an old lady, I am pretty tired even before the walk round the Park. I know why they are doing it obviously but some people just want to see the animals, not have a food dinosaur experience, do lots of shopping, visit the brewery, play in the play barn etc. To be fair, they have spent a lot of money on it and it looks great but there should be an option to go straight to the entrance. The winter illuminations were spectacular and very popular

Although I was disappointed with Whipsnade, it is a lovely environment to walk through. Just a few more marquee animals would improve it no end. My favourite animals were the lynx and wolverines.

I am pleased that you liked the sea lion enclosure. I agree that they seem very happy.

i very much agree on there needing to be a direct entrance!
 
Whipsnade requires better switched on curatorial management and more business acumen directors like indeed YWP seems to have surplus of.

What with every year new exhibits and new animal species that Whipsnade could have.
 
If anyone has been to the park yesterday could you tell me Which tigers were together ???

I go every week and the three of them are always in the same combination, although they do rotate the enclosures. Vlad and Sayan are together and Tschuna is on her own. This will only change if permission to breed is given. Sayan is a non breeding female.

thankyou it’s just because I saw someone pics on Facebook of vlad and a very small looking tiger which I thought was tschuna because Sayan is a lot bigger than her so thought they’d put vlad and tschuna toghether for breeding
 
Can anyone tell me how many of the following animals are there at the park :
Camels, eland, leweche, wallabies, Mara, agouti and visian warty pigs also the names of the Guinea baboons ???
