Best and Worst Zoo Maps

I can't believe this thread got along without the map of Krakow until now. I find it incredibly hard to perceive that this is still the current version in 2022.

To name a very decent one, I'd go for Plzen because of its very neat and beautiful design without losing its main purpose to navigate around the park.

And last but not least a map that I think is not in use anymore for several years (please correct me if I'm wrong) is this monstrosity found at Amnéville Zoo of which I do not know if I love it or despise it or both at the same time. Maybe I can agree with myself on "lovely in parts" but simply completely useless as a map. What do you think?

I think the red is a little in your face, but other than that the map at least does it's job. It does look severely outdated.

Plzen's is very pretty, I love maps I can look at for a long time and just admire.

The Naturzoo Rheine has a paerfect map. Easy to read. people see what animals are too seen. Pleasing to the eye
 
Totally get why they changed it, but the original map of Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, was great. it looked nice, was new, nice design.

the new map is great because the map you get at the entrance has the three different ecological zones separately from each other to make it even more easy to walk around the zoo.

I see why you would think that one is the best, but I must say that the newer versions are way easier to follow, and not as crowded as the earlier ones
 
I agree, the new one is better while thinking of what a map is supposed to do. Why I love the first map, is the exploring part. Its mysterious, you're going on an expedition and you won't know what you will find or do during your adventure through Wildlands.

Its a shame the zoo couldn't convey their first plan, with the three world, their own stories, their own characters and their own mission. because of this, they "dropped" the adventure part and focussed more on being a classic zoo again (the main reason why people visit).

I just think with a bit more pr, more signs, more storytelling, it could have been an amazing zoo, a totally new experience that is different from all the other zoos in The Netherlands (maybe even Europe), where focus not only on animals, but more on conservation and the preservation of the whole ecosystem. Something zoos have to switch too in my opinion, because just seeing a tiger or a giraffe is not going to be enough anymore if you want people to keep visiting your zoo when they are older than 8 years old.

We went to Turtleback yesterday (May 27, 2022) and they have paper maps available again. It's a pretty standard zoo map, kind of hard to read. Especially since I didn't take my reading glasses with me.
 
I present the ultimate worst map of all time: Miami Seaquarium. There is literally nothing in the universe that is worse than this.

I mean, it’s not good, but what about this map is so offensively awful to you?

Uhh it's EXTREMELY cluttered and ugly and difficult to read? Lol I can't imagine anyone actually being able to follow the pathways or orient themselves if they had to use this map to navigate.

Doesn't seem difficult to understand at all :p as I have noted on my guidebook thread, there have been some significantly WORSE maps.

I think the real problem with this map is how difficult it is to navigate when compared to the actual grounds. Landmarks are made disproportionate and the map confuses the true layout of the park. In concept this map is more annoying than bad but in practice this is a pretty terrible map.
 
Singapore's zoo maps are pretty good, they have a decent art style, they give a good idea of what the place looks like and the animals are labeled (except for Jurong Bird Park's map for some reason). Just a me thing but I like zoo maps to label the animals on them

In the 1990s a U.K, zoo awarded a contract to design a new map to a firm of graphic designers. When the map was presented to the zoo, they asked why some of the exhibits and a lot of the paths were missing.

Oh if we put everything on it looks culttered was the reply.

The zoo terminated the contract.
