I spent so much time calculating ways to not let someone steamroll through the competition in NYC or SoCal, I made the mistake of not remembering the Alamo. It's easy to forget how much of a zoo powerhouse Texas is these days.

So true. I still have a bunch of tricks up my sleeve in this state (likely Natural Bridge & Cameron Park soon) :D But its a massive state so its not like these collections are dense. I mean being in Central Texas is nice though bc Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are all day trip distance. Unlike in say the NYC area where the WCS Zoos + Staten Island are much closer. If we had more NYC members it would be interesting to see how quick they could assemble some species for this (Like I went to Gladys Porter this month and its 5 hours from me, 8 from Dallas, and don’t get me started about the drive to El Paso )

That's the thing - texas zoos may be a few hours between each (ignoring outliers like el paso), but you have long opening hours, and they're easy to get to for the most part. WCS don't open until 10, and the absolute latest they stay open is 530pm. At best, you're looking at something like an hour between zoos, no matter what transport you take. None of them are right next to metro stations and only 2 of the 5 have their own parking lots, so there's a bit of walking to even get to their entrances, several blocks at minimum. Add in time getting from trains to station entrances, waiting in lines, dealing with crowds, likely switching trains at points... you could possibly do 2 of the zoos in one day, *maybe* three if you lucked out on all of those things, were a fast walker and in great shape, etc. Vs Texas, where it's easy to do several in a day, even if they're not near each other.

I’ll partake in this challenge, though I haven’t been to much zoos yet this year so I’ll wait until I visit a few more (which I have plans for 2-3 places already the next 3-6 months)
