Moderator note: this news thread split from older thread, due to new ownership of the zoo (formerly called Zoo de Pont-Scorff) - Animal rights group buying french zoo [Les Terres de Nataé]

I just listened to an interview of the new owner on a french radio and learned some infos :
- unfortunately Ant Bwe Lay, the male asian elephant, died just a few days after he was declared new owner. It seems that the animal was suffering serious health problems for a long time. So Ghandi, the elephant female, is now alone.
- white lions will remain in the zoo but they want to get new animals (actually 1.1 brother and sister) and to enlarge the enclosure.
- they want to create a refuge and are looking to purchase some additionnal lands to do it. The refuge will be owned by a foundation linked to the zoo.
- they want to work on research, animal welfair and conservation with a lot of different persons including Sea Shepherd and local NGO but the owner said he knows zoos are a necessity.
- the new name of the park is "Les terres de Natae" which could be translate in "Natae's lands" (Natae is a breton goddess) to highlight the new vision of the owner : a park with wild animals from all over the world connected with Breton's history (like corsairs or breton's discoverers).

Important news : Ghandi, 52 years old female elephant and last of the zoo, left the park last october 14th for Elephant Heaven which welcome its first animal after long wait.

I can't read rhe whole article but it seems that Pont-Scorff wants to welcome new elephants in the future (maybe a small bachelor group but the facility is just too bad to welcome elephant).

L’éléphante Gandhi a dit adieu à Pont-Scorff

Here a video which shows from 5 minutes historical and actual images of the zoo.

Some important news I read in the french forum :
- the elephant barn and outside enclosures have been refurbished and the owner is expecting new animals from the EEP coordinator. I think this is a very sad news as the exhibit is far too small to welcome elephants in good conditions.
- there is an issue with the cost of the building works as all materials are now more expensive so the budget has increased of abouth 20 %.
- the owner talk about some species who will be on-show for the reopening in june : beavers, otters, some land animals (such as pudus, armadillos), clouded leopards, wolves, lynx and birds.
- the care centers for native animals is expected to open at the end of the year but it doesn't seem realistic in my opinion.

Sometimes since my last update on this project.

So here a link to a video where you can see some buidling works : https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=283284470605235

We not see a lot but :
- the new entrance in construction,
- mock rock in the second elephant enclosures,
- the seal pool with mock rock,
- the african penguins.

The director said that there was a lot of refurnishment to do in the zoo such as the sanitation system (2 kms to do).

Here another link to a video where you can see the construction site of the large walkthrough aviary (they use an helicopter to bring the pole) : https://www.ouest-france.fr/bretagn...de-natae-53321d02-2c9a-38c8-8086-6a01ed7e4724

Another link to a video with other view of the zoo (not a lot seems to have change) : Sébastien Musset : « Le premier week-end, il faudra réserver son entrée aux Terres de Nataé ! » [Vidéo]

In this video it is said that the entry price will be 23,90 euros for adults and 18 € for children (really expensive for a such zoo).

And some interesting infos from the same article about the exhibits visitors will see : mixed exhibit for beavers and otters (the previous seabirds exhibit), the seals pool, the new walkthrough aviary, a refurbished spectacled bears enclosure, a brand new enclosure for clouded leopards (presented as the largest in Europe ), a new exhibit for langurs, a completely redone elephant enclosure, a african plain redone too, a breton small farm, a new space for lynx, a walkthrough enclosure for fallow deers, a new wolf enclosure and a refurbished reptile house.

Other things :
- they want to mix gibbons with elephants in the future,
- there will be no shows.

And to finish : Birth of a female colombian black spider monkey.

I haven't kept up to date with this place, but are the animal rights fanatics that don't believe in captive breeding not in charge anymore?

I've been here a few weeks ago...
I love the new exhibit for beavers and otters, it's big and quite natural looking. The seal pool didn't change a lot. The new aviary will evolve for the best I think when plants will grow. It's very high ! Impressive. But not very large. Armadillos arrived in this aviary recently. The spectacled bear enclosure have been refurbished indeed, and squirrel monkeys now live with the old female bear. The new langur exhibit isn't done yet. The new clouded leopard enclosure is very hight, but for sure not the largest in Europe ! I got the impression it was about the same size than the cloudies exhibit at Parc des Félins, but higher. Not plants yet, it looks awful. Walkthrough not completely done yet for fallow deers. The alley at the wolf and lynx enclosures isn't finished, I had some difficulties there with my daughter's stroller. The wolf enclosure is bigger, but not new. The lynx enclosure is nice, with lot of trees and hiding places, but very dark and no observation place or glass, it's a nightmare to take good photos here. Nice upgrade for the reptile house.
I'll go again in a few years. It seems promising to me, with lot of ideas and appealing projects. I'm curious about what it will look in a few years.

Recent news from Nataé :

New for this year : a large red pandas forest where the single animal called Bonifac has moved. Sure he will be joined by others in few months.

The previous red pandas exhibit will be turned into an aviary for rescued laboratory macaques. Last year the zoo received the first 4 animals. It is working with a NGO association called GRAAL which received 50.000 euros from a company to create the accomodation (they are looking for 200.000 euros).
