Moderator note: this news thread split from older thread, due to new ownership of the zoo (formerly called Zoo de Pont-Scorff) - Animal rights group buying french zoo [Les Terres de Nataé]
I just listened to an interview of the new owner on a french radio and learned some infos :
- unfortunately Ant Bwe Lay, the male asian elephant, died just a few days after he was declared new owner. It seems that the animal was suffering serious health problems for a long time. So Ghandi, the elephant female, is now alone.
- white lions will remain in the zoo but they want to get new animals (actually 1.1 brother and sister) and to enlarge the enclosure.
- they want to create a refuge and are looking to purchase some additionnal lands to do it. The refuge will be owned by a foundation linked to the zoo.
- they want to work on research, animal welfair and conservation with a lot of different persons including Sea Shepherd and local NGO but the owner said he knows zoos are a necessity.
- the new name of the park is "Les terres de Natae" which could be translate in "Natae's lands" (Natae is a breton goddess) to highlight the new vision of the owner : a park with wild animals from all over the world connected with Breton's history (like corsairs or breton's discoverers).
