Chang also had a big head and yet fathered beautiful, well-proportioned babies !
@ZCChip Chang did Father beautiful babies. Assam who Chang had with Thai-Hi Way at Chester is majestic. This can be said for Po-Chin who Chang had with Jangoli,in addition the late Tunga who was Po-Chins younger Brother was also striking. Chang also has beautiful daughters exhamples are Tara at Blackpool whom he had with Tonzi, and Karishma at Whipsnade whom he had with Minbu.

Thank you. I know they are full brothers. Just different body types. Ghandi seems to be a shorter bodied with shorter legs.

It is all about different genetics even with same parents.

The physique of the two brothers is very similar, Gandhi just has a bigger head. Look at photos of the two elephants at equivalent ages, the resemblance is obvious !

Here is a photo from march.

Gandhi is still in a period of mass gain, his physique will still evolve. So I don't quite understand your argument.

Apparently Tarak from Heidelberg Zoo will move to Cologne Zoo, Sang Raja and La Min Kyaw will move to Zoo Pont Scorff, Sang Raja also apparently mated the Bindu's eldest duaghter Bindi so perhaps she is pregnant along with Marlar and her mother Shu Thu Zar.

Interesting developments! Do you have a source for this? Not doubting you, would just like to see some confirmation.

I'm glad one of Calvin's sons in Europe is finally moving into a breeding situation as Calvin's not that represented in Europe (compared to most other bulls), especially since his eldest daughter Califa and her calves are all Bornean/mainland hybrids and are no longer permitted to breed. I'm hoping Tarak will sire many calves in the coming years with the Cologne girls!

Hopefully, all three ladies Sang Raja mated with are pregnant and have healthy (female) calves within the next two years or so. Raja's only had male calves thus far so at least one little girl in this batch would be much appreciated. I'm surprised he's being moved out to bachelor holding so soon considering he was imported from Singapore and has only sired 4 bull calves.

It's also interesting La Min Kyaw is being shipped out so early (at age 6) since the new EEP guidelines say zoos can only send young bulls to bachelor herds at around 8-9 years old iirc. They could've just waited a few years and formed a small bachelor herd in Cologne itself (assuming they have the space) with La Min Kyaw and their two 2017 born bulls.

The source is from ELEWIKI but these developments are not set in stone, but we'll have to wait and see if these moves and births happen

Hm, very interesting points of development.

I must admit I do find the vast majority of these moves very questionable, especially the two going to Pont Scorff, that place has had nothing but issues the past few years. Plus as mentioned, Sang Raja and LMK are both fairly valuable bulls, doesn't make much sense to send them off to a non breeding facility that also has issues with management and funding.

I'll take all these moves with a grain of salt for a variety of reasons, none the less that Elewiki can be edited by anyone, and has also been incorrect about transfers and such in the past as well.

All we can do is wait and see (unless new info comes out from a more reliable source).

I don't think this information can be considered credible, but it is very likely that at least part of it is true. Especially when it comes to Bindi's pregnancy. I think she's pregnant and maybe some other cows. But as has already been said, we have to wait until the Cologne Zoo announces it.

Slonice Delhi se bude stěhovat ještě letos. Ve Francii najde parťačku
Delhi from Usti nad Labem will move to EHEES this year. She has lived in the zoo alone since the death of her friend in 2019. In France, she will form a pair with an older cow Gandhi. Let's hope they make friends.

In my opinion, however, it would be ideal if EHEES got a third cow as soon as possible. Gandhi has some health problems due to her age and in a few years Delhi could be left alone again, which would definitely not benefit her. I think the ideal candidate is Bala from Liberec, which is also alone there and in unsatisfactory conditions. She is about the same age as Delhi.

The zoo has completely changed ownership. The bad deeds of the past are due to the buyout by Rewild, today we can hope that it is completely in the past. The elephant facility has been renovated to accommodate the males.

But I agree that moving these two males today is inappropriate.

The information that Bindi is pregnant is definately correct, that was confirmed in the local press. I am pretty sure the information about Sang Raja and the young bull is also correct. Sang Raja is very aggressive against the old bull Bindu since he came into musth last year. The two need to be kept apart and for times even out of sight because Sang Raja is reacting very strongly when just seeing Bindu. That makes day to day manegement difficult.
Its true that Sang Raja is genetically valueable with not that many offspring yet, I guess he will be used as breeding bull at some point in the future.

it’s just a personal preference. Nothing against the elephant.

Belfast zoo phasing out the elephants. Two more older girls on the move.

Belfast Zoo to 'phase out' elephants from animal collection

@ZCChip could thease Asian Cowes move to Howeletts Zoo. When Howletts realese their African heard to Africa, apparently the enclosure will be a retirement home for old or rescued Elephants. If mixing Asian and African Elephants was allowed,Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm would have been a perfect home for the Belfast girls.

There is a news release that bindu will be placed in a indirect contact with the other elephants. I can not translate the page.

Aggressiver Elefant Bindu wird im Zoo von Herde getrennt

Here you go:

A month after the deadly fight in an elephant enclosure in Cologne Zoo, the fate of the attacker has now been decided. As the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" reported on Wednesday, the 53-year-old bull elephant Bindu will have to spend his old age separately from the others.

During a fight among Asian elephants, he injured a female elephant so badly that she had to be put down. Since then, the bull has already been separated from the herd.

As the "Kölner Stadtanzeiger" reported, in 1984 Bindu had already killed a keeper in his former zoo in England who entered his enclosure. The zoo does not want to take any risks, director Theo Pagel told the newspaper. Most elephant bulls would become loners anyway as they got older. Bindu, on the other hand, does not get "solitary confinement". "The animals can trunk through the barriers and interact with each other," said Pagel.

Thank you. I figured it had something to do with the incidents.

I honestly have no idea beyond what the article said.

By the way, is there an European elephant discussion page?

I see no harm in discussion continuing in this thread on the basis nobody has designated this as a population thread by posting a population list anywhere in it.

Ok, take this news with a grain of salt, as it’s from a semi questionable source, but *apparently* Kanvar is set to depart Plankendael at some point in the nearish future.

Also in regards to using this topic as a discussion thread for the European population, I think it should be limited to largely news about the various happenings within the population and discussion surrounding those specific events, similar to the other European population threads. If it’s turned into a free-for-all discussion and speculation topic, it could quickly become flooded with news that isn’t really constructive to anything and just clutters up the topic.
