Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

Which I find rather odd as both the flamingo and Secretarybird in ZT2 almost 15 years earlier had limited flying animations, so it can't be that hard. That simple animation set allowed for all kinds of birds, bats, pterosaurs, and insects to be modded with flight. Pity we still lack it for PZ.
The Frontier is addicted to reuse the existing model, that is why they made African Penguin instead of Secretary Bird, Dingo instead of Tasmanian Devil. But the fact is, clone species already can satisfy most players, so the Frontier has a good excuse to keep cloning species. Actually, I also want to see Shoebill in the game, but it looks like impossible...

Yes, totally agree... I just hope we do get it at some point. Having a zoo game like Planet zoo with a lack of such important aspects would be really bad actually.

In terms of the animals themselves, there's a number of downers in PZ that ZT2 actually had. The aforementioned flying animations, birds and reptiles laying eggs and having incubation timers, and animals being relatively picky about terrain and foliage for example.

Yeah, it's easier to just reuse instead of making new rigs, and so that's what they do. Annoying to some of us but to a lot of people it doesn't matter.

Shoebill may come as a mod with the new crane rig coming up, we'll have to see.

So, my thoughts on the wetlands DLC's animal choices, from least to most;
Spectacled caiman: even an absolute crocodile fanatic like me has to admit that... We didn't need another croc. A large freshwater turtle, like an alligator snapping turtle or a Malaysian painted turtle, or even some Southeast Asian softshell turtle, would be a way better choice. And if it has to be a croc, something like a Cuban crocodile or a slender-snouted crocodile, or even a broad-snouted caiman would have been better.
Nile lechwe: I feel that the nyala already fills the quota of an African wetland antelope; I would have much rather had the Pere David's deer or the Chinese water deer, or hell, how about the South American marsh deer?! I'd have even preferred the blackbuck, to make mixed exhibits with the Indian rhino, but they aren't wetlands animals, are they...?
Asian water buffalo: I'm not that bothered about this one; domestic Ungulates aren't an unknown in the game, and it's a neat contrast. Still, I would have preferred the gaur, banteng or forest buffalo.
Asian small-clawed otter: Ah yes, aquatic meerkat... All jokes aside, I actually think it's a solid choice; the smallest otter species contrasts wonderfully against the largest (in length), and it's a very realistic choice for this game.
Capybara: This animal was nigh inevitable, and I'm very glad this absolute staple of tropical South America has finally made it into the game. It will work wonders for mixed exhibits, and I sure hope they took that into account.
Red-crowned crane: FINALLY!! Another bird! Waders and waterfowl are extremely common in zoos, many of them wing-clipped, so the flying animal mechanic needn't be a limitation. This crane is an excellent first dive into this group of animals; now I'm just pining for Swans, pelicans and ducks to show up too.
Platypus: an animal I never would have expected to see in this game, I couldn't be happier to see this amazingly rare monotreme represented in the game. More Australian animals can only be a good thing, and you can't get any more Australian and frankly amazing than the platypus. Well done frontier! I can't wait to build a habitat for them! :D

Now I'm just left to speculatie on what DLC's may appear in the future... Madagascar, greater Asia, arboreal animals, aviaries... Sky's the limit!

What a great summary, thanks!

I've been wondering if the character-level view is a sign of more smaller animals to come. It'll make the platypus and ASCO a lot more interesting to view but is also kinda needed if we're going to have enclosures for small mammals or birds for example that will look and construct much better at eye-level.

Guess Platypus lowers the chance of an oceania pack and capybara another sth american pack? przewalski's horse and leopard are obvious omissions which would fit in well with a greater asia pack.

Many small animals have the potential to join the ranks; whether or not they do, I hope they choose cool, unique ones, like echidnas and springhares.
As much as I'd like another Oceania or South America pack, I think the current approach of doing it based on habitat helps refresh things too. Perhaps a desert, forest and grassland packs are in the future, including the Przewalski's horse and Amur leopard, of course. An aviary pack is definitely THE most anticipated pack of them all, however.

Ya, I agree. Looking at comments in PZ's official INS, most people are satisfied with Spectacled Caiman. They don't mind duplicate species.

Oceania pack still has many choices, like Tuatara, Kiwi, Takahe, Kagu, Echidna, Tasmanian Devil, Wombat, Tree Kangaroo, even Victoria Crown-Pigeon could be fine since they spend most of time on the ground.

Yeah I just think if one was around the corner they would have held back the platypus as it would be a flagship species for an Oceania pack, there aren't too many other species that would create hype in a way that drives sales. I think there might still be a greater asia pack and then it will be biomes.

It would be cool if they eventually make a nocturnal house/exhibition and that might be a fun feature to launch with an Oceania pack.

Fine for me. Do you have any mods installed? They tend to break when the game updates I believe.

Ok, there was a "special" livestream earlier today, which mostly consisted of painting flower pots...
However, one of those pots had leopard spots painted on it, and the other two had sunflowers and poppies.
The general consensus on reddit right now is a Grasslands scenery pack, with the African Leopard as the pack's flagship species and sunflowers and poppies as new plants. But what other animals could we get here? Przewalski's horse? Maned Wolf? Baboons? Emu? Another antelope? Secretary bird?
It seems like gardening is the "theme" for this pack, like how we had a road trip for North America, a fairytale/story for Europe, and self-care for the Wetlands.

I gotta be honest here and I might be wrong, but this just sounds like when people saw the yellow and purple chairs in one of the Smash Ultimate trailers and thought it was Waluigi confirmed for Smash. It just seems a bit reachy

This tweet says otherwise. If Frontier is acknowledging the pots with an eyes emoji, it has to mean something, right? Plus the “Waluigi chair” thing came after Waluigi was deconfirmed.

It is a bit reachy, but not unlike what they did for the last pack. It's hard to say for sure this early on.
