Potawatomi Zoo Potawatomi Zoo News

Visited today. I don’t think the newborn sloth is on exhibit yet. Also didn’t seem like the giraffes had access to their yard yet. There was construction going on in the old chimp area. A new enclosed area with a climbing structure was also being built by the alligator building. The signage said a new species was incoming with no further notes. Probably some of the primates in the education center.

The former lion exhibit and the space between the peccaries and the bison was empty. Unsure what’s going on there.

I was surprised by how much of the giraffe area isn’t actually accessible for the giraffes between the hill in the middle, the moats, and the barricaded watering hole.

Also I don’t know why they need that much space for a private picnic area and pavilion when there’s a pretty decent park literally across the parking lot. I remember an old master plan had that space filled in by North American species but the master plan didn’t seem to be displayed in the discovery area.

On July 13th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) Indian peafowl Prince has been put back onto the grounds after being removed for avian influenza.

@Persephone if you live near the zoo do you mind checking it out sometime soon to see if any birds on now on exhibit?

Not sure it fits in my schedule in the next two weeks. An hour drive away so if I want to spend more time there than driving I need to commit a four hour block of time and my weekends are booked at the moment. I’ll let you know when I get back there.

To be honest it’s not that great of a zoo. The Chicago ones are equidistant by train so I only really go to Potawatomi when I’m already driving through South Bend for some other reason.
