Asian Elephants in Europe 2022

Some news from elewiki:
The older circus cow Babaty, who lived in Elche (Rio Safari Elche) from 1974 to 2014, could be seen at La Reserva del Castillo de las Guardas from at least April 2022. So there are six elephants there.

Does anyone know why Ma Palai at Mierlo has not conceived? I believe she’s 24 this year and her mother had a female in 2018 with Sibu.

thanks

I can’t find anything to suggest Ma Palai is infertile, though that’d be my guess; or even a retained fetus - it’s possible the zoo may not have announced the pregnancy.

Her mother is breeding well - in addition to the female calf you mentioned born in 2018, she had a male calf in 2021 (her seventh calf) so they could easily have accommodated a calf born to Ma Palai.

correct. I knew of the male calf. He will be moved elsewhere eventually.

Hopefully it will work out even though Mai Palai is getting too old for her first calf.

I’m hoping it isn’t a retained fetus, as has afflicted a few cows in Europe; though given the length of time they’ve been together (during which her mother has conceived and given birth to two calves), I’m doubtful she’ll be successful if it’s a fertility issue.

If she doesn’t breed, the future of the herd will be built around her four year old sister - who will continue their mother’s matriarchal line; with Ma Palai playing a supporting/aunty role.

She's likely a flat liner, or potentially won't stand for a bull (unlikely given her highly social upbringing, however), or she might just have some sort of underlying hormonal or physical issue for why she can't get pregnant.

Regardless, considering her generally low genetic value, I doubt they will go through any extensive effort to get her pregnant at this point. If Radza and Sibu couldn't get her pregnant by now, its just not happening.

Asian elephant bull Kanvar will be transferred from Planckendael to another zoo in a few months, crate training has started. Apparently he is not sufficiently imposing to the females Kai-Mook and May-Tagu to achieve successful breeding, which the studbook keeper desires to do as soon as possible with those two females. There is not yet a concrete selection of a replacement bull for Planckendael.

Olifantenruil op til in Planckendael: Kanvar dan toch niet droomvent voor Kai-Mook

Interestingly, the article states that there are 5 elephants, Kanvar and four cows at the zoo. Yu Yu Yin is not mentioned in the article at all.

I hope that Kanvar will be more successful with cows as soon as possible. After all, it is probably the most valuable young bull in Europe.

Interesting remark, I did not notice that. I think that has to be a mistake.

Mid-April Yu Yu Yin was still there and I have not heard anything about her dying or moving, and I think that would have been in the press.

I agree, in addition she is on the photo in the article.

can someone please translate the danish language to English? My translator doesn’t recognize danish.

Thank you.

Reading from the other posts isn’t Yu Yu Kim not considered a viable breeding female?

Yu Yu Yin is on the older side (43) and has never been bred again after a stillbirth in 2005, so safe to assume she is no longer a viable breeder.

It is Dutch, not Danish. And Google Translate should be able to work with it.

In any case, I included the essentials of the article in my earlier post.

Thank you for the tip! About google translator. My translator said it was Danish.

It looks like from social media that the Zurich Zoo has a new calf, a male. I am guessing it is Mekong x Sandry as the parents are not mentioned.

Exciting news! It’s been quite some time since the last calf was born in the European region. While this is a pretty genetically valuable calf, I’m disappointed it’s yet another bull! It’s really unfortunate how few cow calves have been born these last few years.

I really hope Thisiam is the father due to him being quite genetically valuable but as you said there’s a good chance it is actually Mekong since Thisiam is not a proven breeder.
