ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

Sorry I know it's not news, but does anyone know how the brown bear Cinderella is getting on since her sisters deaths? She's one of my favourite animals there but I heard if she is ok or not but i do know that brown bear are normally a solitary species. Speaking of age, does anyone remeber when she was born? I remember seeing it in an article I believe but it slipped my mind.

I saw her on the 3rd May having not seen her since late last summer - she was very active in the enclosure for the couple of hours I was at the area with Keepers checking in.

She had dug a big hole near the front of the enclosure and seemed to be enjoying digging and throwing the dirt all over the place - keepers had also left some treats in the trees which she went around to get (got some nice pics of her, random treat retrieval one attached).

I believe she’s 6 as she was reported as 5 last year when ZSL reported the bears had woken up when all three were still alive Sleeping Bear-uty wakes up to greet her fans

Thanks, I believe she would be at the age when she would have left her sibling now. Hopefully she's doing just fine :)

Irrespective of how the current situation came about, hopefully the opportunity is there now for a breeding pair. The improvements off-show in the last few years would facilitate this I believe. If she’s anything like the previous occupants (Penny, Wellington, Winslow) and if circumstances dictate, she’ll be at the zoo for the next 20+ years!

It appears that unfortunately i was right about the wallace situation

That’s a shame - 14 doesn’t seem very old for a captive lion.

Surprised to learn Khari already moved as thought the date for that was said to be 10th June at Whipsnade and so perhaps he will be around earlier than announced previously.

Both his parents died at similar ages, perhaps it was slightly premature due to the move but he reached an acceptable age.

Indeed his welfare has to be first but it’s still a pity if it was a little bit down to the move but who knows - if it is announced at all the zoos these days rarely declare a reason so you have to accept it’s up to the vets etc.

Plus I imagine Whipsnade are keen to avoid lion deaths on the site anyway.

Does open again the theory that they might build a pride around Khari as you mentioned before and as per the keepers mentioning a female might come in- 2023 is quite a long way off for returning etc so it will be interesting to see how plans unfold now.

Edit - saw your other post makes sense to build it but does beg the question what happens in 2023 after the new pride goes back - unless whipsnade is the rental accommodation of choice for lions and plays that role for a few years. Which might be beneficial to the population depending on what moves are needed and stops the problem of where to get a whole bunch of lions from.

As pessimistic as it sounds i’m prepared to be annoyed at the choice on lionesses, Khari is related to almost everything.

Interesting I’m not very familiar with the Wallace / parents lineage and wasn’t aware how closely related they are by now - is there anything in wider EU or even in US that’s not so related they might bring in?

Agreed. A short term gain, but not sure how this benefits Whipsnade in the long term. Unless of course a pride is formed quickly; breeds soon after, and Whipsnade have first refusal on any cubs produced?

So Wallace was born at Longleat in 2006 to Kabir x Yendi(I'm sure she had the first 4x litter). Anyhow Kabir produced 10 cubs at Longleat with the 0:2 full sisters Lunar and Yendi so Wallace has plenty of siblings, full and half.

His sisters Malaika and Jassera head up both prides at Longleat with other siblings and nieces & nephews in both prides.

Wallace's daughter Lunar(born 2009) is living at Folly Farm with her daughters. Non breeding as far as I'm aware.

Newquay zoo or Paignton now have got 1:2 who I think maybe Wallace's grandchildren via his daughter.

Dartmoor have Wallace's daughter Kimya(born 2009).

Flamingo Land only have 0:4 females but they haven't long had a new male so they won't be moving plus the youngest is 13yrs and the oldest is 22yrs.

AA haven't long had their lions return so don't see them being split up.

Colchester only have a single male.

Blair Drummond potentially are the only place with available females.
0:4, Hope,Faith,Thistle & Isla.
However Khari's mother and 2 aunties were born here at BD so I don't know if this would work genetically

technically should also rule out aspinal stock both here and abroad as well as anything born at emmen in the last 8 years or so. Blair drummond are a definite no no not between his mother and wallace’s brother being the father of the breeding lionesses

I still wonder why ZSL didn’t make the attempt to breed from Kia after her father Spike passed away. Her castrated brothers could’ve have been retired off-show (or to a private collection) for example.

ZSL do seem to have got themselves into a bit of a pickle with this rental scheme!
