Hamerton Zoo Park Hamerton News 2022

Up at Hamerton today in lovely sunny weather.

Saw a new corsac fox cub outside the den for a while before mother swooped it up to take it back inside - not sure if there is more than one but nice to see another successful arrival.

Couple of good of talks on today along with some tiger and cheetah feeding.

Oops forgot to add and too late to edit - there are two infant ring tailed lemur to see (I’d noted one on previous visit but I had missed one out) - one in the enclosure near the entrance opposite the old squirrel enclosure and the other in the lemur area near the outback aviary (not the hyrax and lemur combo). The one near the outback aviary is a bit younger and still clinging on, the other was hopping off mum today to enjoy time with the other lemurs who were clearly enjoying the new addition. The outback aviary mother has a bit of hair loss and there’s a good information notice on the enclosure that she is ok, under vet care and not in any pain (good to see that sort of proactive information on display).

When me and my family visited Hamerton early last month we noticed that what we assume was the female Malayan Tiger had an unusually shaped back- can someone confirm if there is a problem/diagnosis please.

Visited for a couple of hours today. Quite a few things of note:

There was a brown collared lemur baby clinging to mum in the enclousre near the entrance.
4 tawny frogmouth chicks that hatched in the last two weeks, with any potentially due to hatch in the next couple of days. In a brooder next to them is a turaco chick.
No sign of the fat sand rats, and their enclosure was completely empty.
There was a civet in the jaguarundi enclosure....

Last weekend the jaguarundi was in the enclosure next to the civet (so between the civet and the end where the meerkats are) having moved from their previous space.

Great news on the owl chicks!

What owl chicks? Am I missing something?

Love frogmouths anyway:)

I can quite honestly say that I didn’t know they were not owls - which is madness as I’ve seen them tonnes at Hamerton and love to photograph them - every day here is a school day!

More of a nightjar than an owl
At risk of derailing the thread, even that's not quite as correct as it was once believed to be; molecular studies seem to suggest frogmouths are closer evolutionarily to owlet-nightjars, swifts, and hummingbirds than true nightjars, which branched off considerably earlier from that same clade.

A brief little article about development work at Hamerton has been posted on their website.

Europe's leading zoo theming specialists, Koda Creative, are coming back to Hamerton and will be busy with several different projects around the park - some animals will be off-show during this development, with the Malayan tigers and fat sand rats both mentioned. They will move back on show as soon as the work is done.

Also, Koda are doing the rock-work both inside and outside a new Tortoise House which is already under construction.

The zoo has said on their website that the 2020 burrowing owl chicks have moved to the Scottish owl centre in order to make room for the 2 chicks hatched this year.

Up at Hamerton today - very sunny indeed!

Good new space for the jaguarundi between tigers and bears next to the new larger enclosure. Seems very content with her new space (basic pic attached).

At least 2 Parma wallaby joeys at different stages emerging from the pouch.

A new week old alpaca is on show and getting around in that very leggy stage.

More frogmouths have emerged - saw 5 chicks today in the baby bird area; 3 larger and 2 very small and more to come it seems according to the labels.

Three new corsac fox cubs running about.

The lone otter isn’t dead but off show pending a transfer with new otters to arrive which is good news for otter fans.

Too late to edit but when I went round last thing there were 7 tawny frogmouths not 5 and a couple more to come.

Apologies - I’d missed another pod of two first time round!

Great result hatching wise.

The young collared lemur mentioned above (bit younger than the two ring tailed babies) opposite the first Binturong - very active today! Mum swooping it up every time it went climbing but it was well up for walking off across the branches.
