Species no longer held/nearly gone from US zoos

Zoo Miami has a herd that has had breeding successes. So at least theirs a fighting chance theyll persist.
Miami is down to a herd of females that are all due to leave soon. SDZSP/SDZ and Miami are all phasing out their giant eland and are sending them all back to African Safari Wildlife Park, the owner of all the giant eland, because ASWP has been very difficult to work with. Unfortunately it looks like this park will be the sole holder of the species once SDZ’s male passes away and Miami sends their females out.

Oh thats a shame. I always thought there was a bull at Zoo Miami considering several births over the last few years. They were a favorite of mine to see, and it will be a real blow to Miami's great bovid collection if/when they leave. I assume given the past breeding success, the herd at Africa Safari Wildlife Park will be just sizeable enough to maintain the species to a degree in the interim if the phase out status of the species were to change in the future.

Aren't resplendent quetzals in DWA?

Not any more, unless they've got one hiding out in that breeding center of theirs. They do have Golden-headed Quetzal still.

Interesting, I was not aware there's three-toed sloth in the US. Were they ever at other facilities in the last 30 years besides DWA

I believe so, I don't remember who specifically.

For what its worth, I did see a Fire-tufted Barbet at Miami around a week ago, so they're in at least one other facility besides SDZ.

Ah nice, but that's still only two birds a continent apart.

Hasn't Brookfield had some good success with pangolin breeding? I wouldn't count them out so easily.

Somewhat, but the species is not proving successful, more holders are slowly leaving and the population is dropping. SDZ wanted pangolins for the Children's Zoo but apparently couldn't get them.

ICF has 2.2 Brolga. I wouldn't be surprised if the import more, either.

Nice. They probably would import to keep their status with every crane.

ZooTampa holds Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby as well.

That's right, it's Tampa with them not Miami.

Red Howler Monkeys
Does DWA have them? Otherwise this species could be gone. Formerly at Monkey Jungle

Yes they do, only holder in the US.

Another species to the gone list:

Boto
The only individual in the US was held at Pittsburgh Zoo and died back in 2002. Surprised to find out there was ever even a Boto in the US.

On the assumption you mean Amazon River Dolphin, there's been several in the US at a handful of different zoos. Unfortunately their care was lacking a specific element (shallow area for sleeping) and they never did very well and died out.

Well, to add a bunch...

Gone:

Yapok - gone currently, but knowing DWA may appear again
Red-shanked Douc Langur
South American Sealion - from zoos anyways, there is a handful at a traveling show
Margay
Guenther's Dik-dik
Jentink's Duiker
Saiga
Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo
Jabiru
Goliath Heron
Black Heron
Guanay Cormorant
Resplendent Quetzal
Greater Yellownape
Cardinal Lory - per recent reports from SDZ, unless they're now off display

Almost gone:

Parma Wallaby - might only be one left at SDZ
Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby - LA, The Living Desert, and possibly Miami
Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth - one individual at DWA, but they might import
Black & Rufous Elephant Shrew - only a couple zoos still have them, breeding has been poor
Potto - couple zoos still have them but they're not likely to stick around
Pygmy Marmoset - not that many zoos with them now
Common Woolly Monkey - two semi-offshow at Louisville
Tree Pangolin - still at a fair handful of zoos but breeding is basically negligible
Raccoon Dog - handful at Oklahoma City
Sun Bear - pretty much all individuals left are elderly
Guadalupe Fur Seal - if SeaWorld SD still has any
Walrus - down to Seaworlds and Indianapolis
Hawaiian Monk Seal - one left at Minnesota, one in Hawaii, one at a research center in California
Aardwolf - one left at Cincinnati
Mountain Tapir - LA and Cheyenne Mountain
Barasingha - zoo population is likely doomed now
White-lipped Deer - only a few left in zoos, more privately
Musk Deer - not that many left now
Black Duiker - around a dozen left, and not breeding well
Harnessed Bushbuck - couple still at Gladys Porter
Gaur - basically reliant on Bronx for pure stock to remain in the US now
Musk Ox - down to Point Defiance in the lower 48, but there's plenty of Alaskan holders
Commerson's Dolphin - two left at Aquatica Orlando
Short-finned Pilot Whale - Seaworld SD is down to three
Tongan Scrubfowl - SDZ's lone female still lives on, but is well in her 30's
Kagu - handful of birds at three zoos, never common though
Emperor Penguin - small group left at Seaworld SD
Brolga - one or two at ICF
Shoebill - down to DWA and Tampa
Oriental White Stork - one at Louisville
Storm's Stork - down to two facilities I believe now, SDZSP and I think Bronx
Black-necked Stork - two (three?) birds left
Lesser Adjutant - Racine and Bronx, reliant on breeding
Ornate Hawk-Eagle - scattering of birds left
Gray Gull - only a few facilities left, on its way out
Parakeet Auklet - North Carolina
Crested Auklet - Aquarium of the Pacific
Yellow-casqued Hornbill - pair at Memphis
White-thighed Hornbill - one left, now in a irreputable place in FL
Purple Roller - might be gone now from SDZSP
Fire-tufted Barbet - the lone bird at SDZ I believe is the last
Plate-billed Mountain Toucan - two or three holders left
Horned Parakeet - SDZ is the only holder
Collared Lory - couple left at SDZ at most
Blue-winged Pitta - might be gone
Whale Shark - Georgia is down to either two or three now, but they were the only holder anyways

That was a pretty painful post to write... and that's not even the half of them...
South American Sea Lion should still be held on display at the Coral World Ocean Park in the U.S Virgin Islands.

Grey Gull might be around in small numbers at private facilities (I know Hemker has a couple), although this may not be the case.

A pair of Sunda Slow Lorises was held at the Minnesota Zoo up until around 2017-18, when they were transferred to an unknown facility. I’m not sure where they went, or if they are still alive, but I would guess the species is now gone from North America.

The last Common Ringtail Possums left in the U.S have passed away recently.

Both Sulawesi Bear Cuscus and Red Slender Lori’s are down to single individuals at Memphis, so it’s unlikely they have much of a future in the U.S

There are only two Ring-Tailed Vontsira left in the U.S, both of which are held at the Bronx. Bronx has showed interest in importing some from Europe, but we’ll just have to wait and see if this comes to fruition.

Spotted Fanaloka was down to a single individual at the Capital of Texas Zoo, but Nashville has recently imported a pair from Europe, of which recently gave birth to a male offspring.

Yes I was aware of Hemker, to my knowledge breeding success has been low and so the species is not faring well population-wise.

There was still a pair of Red Slender Lorises at Memphis.

Are the Fanaloka on display? Its surprising there was an import, given how low the population in Europe is on to Zootierliste.

Zorilla is another species on the way out, the one at RainForest Adventures Zoo is gone and I think that leaves Tanganyika Wildlife park as the sole holder.

Rabbs' fringe-limbed tree frog is gone without hope of it ever coming back as it went extinct in 2016 at the Atlanta zoo

Eastern Hoolock Gibbon, Angolan Talapoin, Hamlyn's Monkey, Sooty Mangabey, King Colobus, Black-tufted Marmoset, Wied’s Marmoset, Brown-mantled Tamarin, and Brown-mantled Tamarin are all down to one holder or are gone

There is the rescued Laysan Albatross at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Versicolored Barbet, Puerto Rican Woodpecker, and Golden-backed Woodpecker are all down to single holders

Collared Kingfisher, Hoopoe, Black hornbill, White-thighed Hornbill, Jackson’s Hornbill, White-crowned Hornbill, African Gray Hornbill, African Pied Hornbill, Pharaoh Eagle Owl, Oriental Bay Owl, Guiana Crested Eagle, Short-toed Snake-Eagle, and Black Kite are also down all to one or fewer holders.

Blyth's (Papuan) hornbill is also on the way out

Really? Trevor Zoo still shows the serow on its website map.
That's such a shame if true. I was thinking of going to Trevor when I visit NY again this summer.

They haven't updated their map in years.

I believe Safari Wilderness still have a herd, but I don't know the sexes or status.

I don't think they ever had giant eland? They were incorrectly labeled.

Santa Fe Teaching Zoo in Florida still has 2 margay in their collection (granted both are listed as being in their late 30s so likely gone soon)
Cincinnati Zoo still has both Aardwolves
There are only 4 Cardinal Lory left at 4 institutions (SDZ, Louisville, Dickerson Park, and Wildlife World)
Kagu are held at 5 institutions consisting of only 16 birds (SDZ, Lincoln Park, Pinola, SDWAP, and Toledo)
There are 16 Parma Wallabies at 6 institutions currently

Collared Kingfisher, Hoopoe, Black hornbill, White-thighed Hornbill, Jackson’s Hornbill, White-crowned Hornbill, African Gray Hornbill, African Pied Hornbill, Pharaoh Eagle Owl, Oriental Bay Owl, Guiana Crested Eagle, Short-toed Snake-Eagle, and Black Kite are also down all to one or fewer holders.

Who has Hoopoe and Black Kite? I'm missing those off the respective threads.

Do you have any of the holders that once had the following Hamlyn's Monkey and King Colobus?

I'm sure both were at one point since 1990 present in US zoos given their prevalence overseas, but I would like to know of any zoo here that had them so I can eventually compile the updated list with some info.

I'm guessing the last zoo that had Sooty Mangabey was Brookfield?

A pair of Hoolock were present at Louisiana Purchase Zoo as recently as 2020.

Another primate that I believe is completely gone in the states (but possibly present in Canada) is Barbary Macaque.

That's the show I mentioned in my original post, they have a handful of South American Sealions.
Ah, that makes sense. :) The location near Sarasota is their permanent place, it closed for a while (I believe the owner passed away) but it seems like they are open again.
When were bearded pigs at Tampa?
I am not sure of the exact dates, but somewhere between 2004-2010. ZooTampa had a really good swine collection at one time. They've held bearded pigs, warty pigs, warthogs, babirusa, and red river hogs. Right now they just have babirusa and red river hogs.

I don't think they ever had giant eland? They were incorrectly labeled.
I think you're right, looking back at my picture I am pretty confident it's a common eland now.

Who has Hoopoe and Black Kite? I'm missing those off the respective threads.
National aviary and Bronx, they are on your thread. I'm unsure of their status, but they are either already gone or only have a single holder each, so I thought they were worthy of being mentioned on this thread.

Do you have any of the holders that once had the following Hamlyn's Monkey and King Colobus?
Lupa zoo for Hamlyn's and King Colobus for Living Treasures Wild Animal Park, off the Gibbons, Geladas, and Guenons Galore! -- Primates in North America thread. Like the birds mentioned above, I'm unsure of their actual status, just that we have lost or may be quite close to losing these species.
