Louisville, Kentucky isn't in Ohio... you'd know that if you really went there. Disqualified! :p

Congratulations to @Kudu21 on being the first person to finish the 36 Trials, and with 7 months to spare no less! I realized fairly quickly into this game that someone would eventually finish, but Kudu surpassed my time expectations by a solid 2-4 months. Came out of the gate swinging and never looked back. And to think I was on the verge of catching up...

And the race for second place begins. Well done!

Indeed.

I'd been quietly anticipating Kudu's finishing for a while now, so I've had time to think about how to handle there being an official "winner" in May rather than at the end of the year. It's not quite as climactic, but here's what I've decided: having won under the initial conditions I outlined, Kudu21 will be considered the official winner of ZCCNA 2022. Trophy will be sent in their dreams shortly :p

While I hope the motivation to see how well you can do is enough to keep people going the rest of the year, I have a small addition to make. Unofficially, my policy is that the winner each year gets a small reward or part in next year's challenge; last year's winner got to choose one of the trials in this challenge. I already have an inkling of what I will be doing for next year, and what the reward will be for it. @Kudu21 has already qualified for it, but additionally anyone who finishes all 36 trials by the end of the year will be given the same reward. It won't rig 2023 in any way - it's not that big a reward - but I think the winner(s) will have fun with it nonetheless! ;) (It also excludes me by default - can't explain why without giving it away though!)

And so the game continues!

Los Angeles Zoo (28 May)

Have Trunk Will Travel: 4/4 COMPLETED
3. Baird's Tapir (Tapirus bairdii)
4. Mountain Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque)

Another Dang Meerkat: 4/4 COMPLETED
4. Los Angeles Zoo

28/36 trials completed
35/36 trials in progress
Total zoo visits so far: 13

And with that I think I'll be mostly stalled for a while... only additions planned for the next couple months at least will be a penguin or two.

I will say, while maybe not quite as climactic of an ending, I have enjoyed this challenge, and this style of challenge, much more so than the older style of challenge we've had. The "piece-meal" style has been really nice as someone who, in any challenge, knows they won't be the first-place finisher, to have the satisfaction of at least finishing parts of the challenge. Others may disagree, but I am a huge fan of this new style of challenge and would be thrilled to see it as the norm for future challenges.

Thanks for the input Neil. This year was very experimental, so it's nice to hear that someone enjoyed the particular style :)

As far as future challenges go, the plan is for next year to have a different design - something closer to the previous style (a simple racking up of species with limited scope) but still with some new and innovative features to keep things interesting from year to year. But for what it's worth, I *do* take people's input into account when designing these so feedback is valuable!

I will also say that there is the possibility of other "scavenger hunt"-type challenges on the forum in the future, even if it won't be from me anytime soon.

Louisville, Kentucky isn't in Ohio... you'd know that if you really went there. Disqualified! :p

When you live in Texas long enough you forget that you can drive two hours and actually be in a different state :p

I guess what they say is true, never underestimate Texas ;):p I looked into it early on, and I could have completed all of the challenges except "An Unbearable Challenge", "Cold as Ice", and maybe "Cat Got Your Tongue?", depending on whether or not any snow leopards have found their way into any of the private facilities in the state, without leaving the state of Texas (although driving to El Paso, which would be necessary for challenges like "The Edgar Allen Poe" and "Champion of the Sun", from DFW would be just about as long of a trip as from DFW to St. Louis ).

But anyways, thank you very much! :D Competing in the competition this year was an absolute blast! I will echo @Neil chace in saying that having all of varied, individual challenges that you could cross off along the way made it both really engaging and really rewarding. I really appreciated the diversity in species necessary to complete the challenges. So a huge kudos to @Coelacanth18 for putting all of this together, and good luck to everyone else as the race for second place ensues! :)

As promised, below is my final, complete collection of species seen for the challenges and where and when I saw them. By the time I completed the challenge on Saturday, I was able to ensure that I had no repeat species across any of the challenges!

Louis ).
You definitely got lucky location-wise for this challenge (though in no way am I saying your win wasn't impressive). I live in New England, where only 16 challenges could be finished without leaving the region! Congrats on your win, and I'm definitely jealous of some of the species you can easily see at zoos nearby!

I've done both of those drives, so I can't say I blame your choice on that one :p

Geographic advantage is a hard one to address, especially in a challenge like this requiring a broad swath of species as well as specific ones... it's something that I intend addressing in whatever next year's challenge is though, whatever that ends up being :)
