I've just got back from my first visit to Blackpool Zoo in sixteen years, and had an excellent time! Easily one of my favourite zoos now. Here's a few notes from my trip:
- I was a few days late to see the lions and tiger before they moved, but I definitely will be back when they return.
- This visit marks the first time I've ever seen a giant anteater awake and walking around, even though they were on the far end of their enclosure I was still so happy to see them!
- the World of Wings aviary is open, a keeper in there explained that they were given the go-ahead to re-open with foot baths at the door, which surprised me. I've been to other zoos with aviaries similar to that one where they're completely closed off. Either way, I saw a good range of birds in there, including ibis, spoonbills, inca terns and rainbow (I think) lorikeets in their own separate cage.
- I was lucky enough to spot one of the Iberian wolves running around, but there were a few people on the wooden viewing deck looking down into their enclosure going "AWWOOOOOOOOO!!!!! AWOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" and I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor thing.
- I didn't realise this until looking at the map again after I left, but there was a section I missed entirely, the red river hog and sitatunga enclosures next to the farm animals. I'll have to remember that on my next visit.
- Project Elephant Base Camp is a massive improvement over the original enclosure, it is just fantastic! The elephants look much happier than I remember them being before, the enclosure is well-designed and I liked the mist in the indoor space.
- It's a shame there's no proper reptile house any more (unless there is and I missed it, I just remember reading on Wikipedia that the original closed in 2018), but for what there is, the zoo still has a good reptile line-up, better than many other zoos I've visited lately.
