The purpose of this thread is to document all births, deaths, transfers, etc. of all okapi in North America. Currently the population stands at roughly 96 (51.45) individuals living at 30 different facilities in the US and 1 in Mexico. The population is doing fairly well in terms of breeding with 4 calves born in 2020 and two born in 2021 so far. One female Asili is confirmed to be pregnant at Audubon Species Survival Center and is due in July 2022. The only problem is there seems to be a bit of a male bias in births since of the 6 calves born in these two years only one is female. White Oak and both San Diego parks have been the most successful breeders of this species and are responsible for the majority of the births that occur. White Oak's population was pretty hard to find and what I have listed is the closest I could get to so it's likely it is not 100% accurate. If you know more about their population or if I'm missing anything or have made any errors elsewhere please let me know!

The third male at the Audubon Species Survival Center is "Mosi" from the San Diego Zoo. "Omar" is the same animal as "Amare". He was renamed when he arrived at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park because they already had an animal with a very similar name.

That said, San Diego only has 2.1 animals currently, "Zuri", Toby", and "Subira".

There are some other errors, but unfortunately I am not at liberty to discuss them because they've not been announced. Overall, very nice work, though!
 
For purposes of completeness, the real/original name of "Opey" in Los Angeles is Baraka. The LA Zoo must've gotten a donation to rename her sometime between when she gave birth to Bomani and Kota, as her name is different in the press release for each birth.

Yes, I know. I listed her name as Opey since that’s what they call her now. I changed the names of any individuals who have had their names changed in all my population lists. :)

On a side note, I wish zoos would just stick with animals’ birth names. I hate it when they change their names and it becomes very difficult to track the individuals down especially when they’re transferred to different zoos.

I'd imagine, yes. Okapi can live up to 30 in captivity, and considering Zach is only 18 he could still have some years in him. Zoo Tampa will probably continue to hold Okapi's either way; whether it's a breeding pair or surplus individuals.

Fantastic, for some reason I thought their average age in captivity was in the early 20 years.

Both of these statements are correct, I have been the DAK a few times; but I have only been to the lodge once. I am supposed to go in June, so I will try and get more pictures of the lodge exhibits. The lodge and those exhibits are a separate area from the park.

I saw 11 of those species on my visit. The seven I didn't see were okapi, nyala, sitatunga, springbok (saw at park), steenbok, plains Zebra, and red River hog. The domestic cattle is a watusi. I also saw a grey-crowned crane, Ostrich, Greater Flamingo, and Pink-backed Pelican. There was one savanna I didn't see though, so some (or all) of those seven species likely reside at that fourth savanna.

Really great news that OKC has its first calf since 2015 but it’s unfortunate that it’s yet another male calf… our youngest female is 2 years old. Really hope
the other pregnant female in the population, Asili, has a female calf soon, she’s been on birth watch for over a month at this point.
 
Does anyone know if the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Cleveland, Ohio, ever had okapi? The zoo website doesn't say they ever did and I don't have proof they did, but I- along with my mom and another ZooChatter (CMZMan) vividly remember the zoo having them in 2006 or '07. We are all definitely not mixing up okapi with bongo or Cleveland with Columbus or Cincinnati.
