Planet Zoo Planet Zoo!

Otters are on their own, Badger is in Badgers, Platypus is in Platypuses, Seal is in Seals, Sea Lion is in Sea_Lions, Moose is in Moose, and a lot of other weird ones

It doesn't make a lot of sense and the folders really aren't indicative of too much it's just kind of a way for Frontier to group things, but it's not the best. As someone who mods something I could do is just change 2 or 3 files and have a different folder name and it'd work the same
And the snozzberries taste like snozzberries. :p
Also, if "badgers" are a folder now, we might get to see a couple of tough-guy mustelids from ZT2 in the future... but that's a story for another day (and another thread).

This just in: the Komodo Dragon has a new Zoopedia PFP!
Don’t know why they needed to change it (the Saltwater Croc’s got changed to show off deep diving, and the Llama’s to better reflect the colors of the species), but its certainly more dynamic than the old one!
Speaking of the Komodo Dragon, I don’t know how many people know this, but a couple of little details with it are copy-pasted from the Nile Monitor (that’s not a good thing, btw).
  1. It eats the same stuff as the Nile Monitor, that being rodents, mealworms, and amphibians. The crocodilians are out having gourmet carcasses and the Komodo is stuck with cheap lunch meat (more or less).
  2. It has the same lowly 1500 appeal rating as the Nile Monitor, too. When I was theorycrafting a Zoo Tycoon-style game before PZ came out, I thought it would make sense if the Komodo Dragon was the most popular reptile with guests (because “dragon”). But nope! Apparently guests would rather look at a terrapin, or a tarantula, or a friggin’ newt than a Komodo Dragon!
The Komodo’s issues aren’t anywhere near as bad as the camel’s, or the Malayan tapir’s, or the Himalayan Brown Bear’s, but they are still there and they annoy me. Give the dragon his dues, Frontier!

Honestly, in my opinion the majority of base-game animals could use updated zoopedia PDF’s. They’re really contrasting compared to the PDF’s in the most recent DLC’s which show off the animals in extremely precise detail. Regarding the diet, it would actually be suitable for a Komodo, it it was a baby. I’ve seen Komodo dragons feeding in multiple zoos and adults do not eat mealworms and amphibians.

I think some of the base game Zoopedia PFPs are meant to be homages to the “group pictures” in Zoo Tycoon 1 (especially with some of the PFPs from the beta). Maybe multiple PFPs for one species could be added in an update?
As for the diet, that’s somehow even more degrading than what I said! It’s not cheap lunch meat, it’s baby food! How humiliating…

Speaking of such silly issues, the Llama is currently showing up in the African selection.

Also why do all the birds have scent marker enrichment when none of the species available have any real sense of smell? Makes 0 sense.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this, but the komodo dragon also has enormous minimum habitat size requirements. 600m2 for a single animal? I looked up the size of some real enclosures (that also facilitate multiple animals and/or breeding) and they mostly seem to fall around 300/400 square metres.

This is common for PZ. The majority of the roster averages 2 to 3 times the recommended exhibit size from AZA/EAZA, and it's per animal. Several species are very over the top in terms of space requirements, it's rather annoying. Nothing wrong with giving animals lots of space, but as I've said before it's more like Planet Safari Park with how huge exhibit recommendations are and the size of enrichment items and trees.

Exept for iguanas, iguanas are probably having claustrophobic issues in that small glassed box;
Also I'd like to point out that Frontier has created an issue with foliage for the animals in the game, which is that animals require their native foliage to be satisfied, and it's not really realistic because:
1. They do not care about what species of foliage there is as long as there's somewhere to hide and grass to eat
2. It's not realistic because the only time animals have native foliage is in indoors conditions (and most of the time neither in their true enclosure, just around them, otherwise they'd eat or destroy everything)

Very true indeed.

Not just foliage but terrain percentages too - both an unwelcome throwback to ZT1. I usually ignore the foliage, it's just silly for the reasons you already stated and just plain unrealistic all around.
Terrain is a bit more logical perhaps - but also for many species they don't care all that much. Certainly aardvarks need a diggable substrate for example, but Polar bears and Arctic foxes do not require snow nor will animals be unhappy if there's a bit too much dirt vs grass.

I personally hope they make iguanas habitat animals in the future, somehow; imagine if that happens and we can have a chameleon and a gecko instead! That'd be amazing! :)
And yes, there are lots of things to update. For example, why doesn't the gemsbok benefit from being housed with other animals?! It makes no sense; in the wild and in captivity, how common is it to see them with zebras, giraffes and rhinos? Furthermore, siamangs should be compatible with more Southeast Asian animals, like tapirs and babirusa. And the Indian peafowl doesn't benefit from being with Asian elephants, Indian rhinos and water buffaloes?! Those birds always hang around them in zoos! For free food, no doubt...

There's a mod that fixes all of this, but they really ought to do it officially.

Maybe it's just the inner architect in me but perhaps I like PZ more for the building aspects than the actual purpose of the game.....the animals! I'm getting the hang of building more complex buildings and structures and right now it feels great!!! :)Planet Zoo 7_27_2022 10_35_07 PM.png

Ironically while the game tries to sound smart by being "realistic", you can place azaleas (which are toxis for those who do not know) into animal enclosures.
This could be an interesting gameplay dynamic though; some plants, while pretty for visitors and/or cheaper to purchase, could make the animals sick. I think JPOG had a similar mechanic.

I think for PZ I'll stick with historic-looking zoos cuz making modern-looking ones with moats is ridiculously hard. I tried to make an indoor tiger exhibit like the ones at Tierpark Berlin but the tiger wouldn't even go inside and I enclosed the exhibit with grade 3 over 10' high mesh because that's what the zoopedia said tigers need. The tiger climbed over the fence which wouldn't happen in real life. The game makes me feel EXACTLY like this guy... I'll just call the game Planet Agitation!!! And happy World Tiger Day!

Same can be said for the red poppy too. There's another one or two like that I think but they're escaping me offhand.

Sounds like you didn't add the climb proof buffer. And both lions and tigers have proved surprisingly good at climbing taunt mesh before.
