From yesterday and today for those interested:

The (relatively new) pair of Biesa Oryx (only ones in the U.K., I think I heard on here) have now been separated from the rest of the hoofstock in the African section, being held in the paddock behind the large hoofstock house, but still visible from the okapi enclosure. This has been the case for over a month now, since June 1st. I assumed there must be some issue with the mixing of them and possibly the Eland or Zebra females but I have no clue why. Hopefully it’s temporary.

A few months ago I saw one of them clashing horns with the eland for a while. On a subsequent visit I noticed one had lost one of its horns. Don’t know whether this is the reason. They seemed to disappear for some weeks, then appeared again at the back of the okapi area.

Re planning application

It says ‘golf reserve’ was gorillas wishful thinking?
i believe 'golf' may have stood for 'gorillas of the lowland forest' or that is how someone explained it anyway. The plans did appear to show a large apehouse- style building also. But I'm still unclear whether 1. it really was for gorillas( and not golf?) and 2. if its been withdrawn or not.

1. We don't know whether it was for gorillas or not - given that it's been stated on several occasions (I can attest to one) that gorillas are planned for the facility, "golf" being an acronym (for Gorillas of the Lowland Forest) seems likely.

2. I don't see why it would be withdrawn (as in not allowed to be built) - the only reason I can think of is lack of funds.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park have just announced on their Facebook page that they will be closed Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th because of the forecast temperatures. The park will reopen on Wednesday.
The same piece advertised their shops and play barns being fully open as they were air-conditioned, so maybe their pre-bookings are down too and the closure is being used as a marketing opportunity. I've never been, but am told much of it is very open and a long way from shade or shelter?
Not sure that an air-conditioned play barn is very appealing either, given the huge hike in Covid cases at a time of year when they were expected to fall.

Withdrawing a planning application means a LA can charge for a subsequent one, it prevents the first from being formally refused, and is often used as a replacement for the old 'outline' planning permission; ie to get an idea discussed, before honing it for eventual submittal.
Quite likely to be nothing whatever to do with lack of funds...

It's a few years since my last visit, but as far as I know the same applies now as it did then; there are zero indoor or substantially-covered areas within the main body of the zoo, around 170 acres if memory serves me correctly.

There are some wooded areas (maybe a fifth of the total area at most?) and a few undercover viewing areas and small rain shelters - but only one small section of animal house you can enter (the giraffe house). Otherwise you're pretty much in the sun unless you're in a shop, café or toilet block. Wouldn't be the best choice of place to be on a record-setting hot day, certainly.

The leopard enclosure has that upstairs viewing point

Forgot about that. It could do with more than one bench underneath. The viewing areas referenced are decently-sized covered areas on the walkway of Land of the Tigers and between the black Rhino and the African hoofstock, as well as a smaller thatched covered area in the Lion country. I think the older part of the park is adequately covered (only just) bar project polar. But the newer development (Ethiopian, Sea lion, Himalayan and Atlantic forest areas) have nothing in terms of cover which isn’t fun in heavy rain or hot sun.

Yesterday the temperature difference between the Lemur/African wild dog area (woodland does a great job of cooling the weather) and the open polar bear/South America area was extremely noticeable - people hung around these areas more.

The zootierliste page has had Emu moved to former holdings, yet I saw him back at the beginning of the month, has the Emu (Is his name Elvis? I'm sure somebody said it was here on ZooChat) passed away quite recently? Or is this another case of someone not seeing an animal and getting a little too trigger-happy over on ZTL?

Elvis the emu was featured as the zoos longest resident in articles - there was a Facebook campaign dating 2016 about him never leading the building etc. so definitely an Elvis.

He’s referenced on the 2021 thread

If you visit the website and filter by birds however only the ostriches show up. Don’t know if YWP are a bit of a Whipsnade and the key way you find out about animals leaving and stuff is the links on the site get changed.

Find out about the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

They've not had Emu as a featured animal on the website for many, many years, so the lack of Elvis on there doesn't necessarily mean he's left the collection. It'll be a shame if he's passed on we saw him more than the actual ostriches!

Does anyone know how many leopards are currently at yorkshire. I have been about 4 or 5 times and have been lucky to see the leopards on most visits but I'm unsure how many there are. I was under the impression that there was a male and female called Drake and Freya. Is this still the same

Yes, Drake and Freya are the breeding pair at YWP. They alternate the two enclosures.
