Good to see Marwell getting frilled lizards, they are a fantastic species, are there any others in the UK?

Frillies (probably originally sourced from NG, rather than Aust) are quite commonly available in the pet trade. Nice large lizard, but not greatest display - doesn't happen to sit there with frill open...

First off, I never said I was staff.

Second off, these are from updates given at the meetings from events in the previous month. I am a keen supporter of the zoo and would like to share this information with other's on the forum, which I'm sure is benefited. Should I keep my mouth shut then?

Zupu, what information has MD allegedly got wrong?
and could the two of you please conduct your difference of opinions via the private message facility, lets not block up a thread with tittle tattle please.
we are all friends here

I have to agree, we're all friends!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is an important matter which needed rectifying. It is not "tittle-tattle" , it is also NOT a private matter when it concerns incorrect information being reported as fact about a zoological collection.

I do understand that zupu, but can you sort it out amongst yourselves:)

Zupu - well how about you post montly updates, you say your staff yet you do not post any threads on marwell news

MD is only doing his best to bring the forum upto date with the latest news, IT IS NOT HIS FAULT if the information he has been given is incorrrect

We have already had a similar case to this already, i will leave it to you both to sort it out.

"ZooChat is an online community focussed on discussion about zoos, animal conservation and nature in general. We have a worldwide audience of zoo and animal conservation enthusiasts who discuss zoos and share photos and other information about over 450 zoos from over 50 countries"

I think the whole point of the forum is being lost here. If I wanted factual information on a zoo, its animals or its future plans I'd go to the zoos website. This forum is for zoo enthusiasts and although that includes some of us that are lucky enough to work in our chosen profession, many of the members of this forum are the people who not only pay the wages ultimately of zoo staff, they are ambassadors for zoos in general and spread many of the zoos ethos because of their enthusiasm.

Many of the posts on this forum are personal opinion and I always assume as much, unless a source or quote is given. i know absolutely nothing of the set up at Marwell but if the Oryx club is an official organisation of the zoo then the information should be current and official. Therefore if a zoo is releasing information that has been sanctioned for release, its directors must be happy in the knowledge it will be diseminated and discussed. I appreciate things change on a daily basis, especially with the credit crunch, but in our organisation we are instructed as to which information is public domain and which is not. Many enthusiasts work in zoos and read this board, but don't post as it is against their terms of employment to discuss zoo matters. This is often in case a personal opinion is assumed to be the opinion of a zoo. Zupu, if you are able to tell us which parts of the updates have been supersceded then that is great, but in the mean time I enjoy reading what could end up being pure speculation or opinion. The sheer numbers of zoo tycoon that have been sold indicate how many zoo enthusiasts are out there and have their opinions on designing and running a zoo. Thanks to everyone who says nice things about their zoo and for those that constructively criticise. Zoos should be a safe and pleasant haven for animal and visitor alike, while this forum should be safe and pleasant for all contributors.

Zebedee, yes the oryx club is an official part of the zoo

and i totally agree with what you have put, this is not the site to come on if you are looking for definite facts, and as you said things change everyday

MD - no-one is blaming you for your mistakes, as i said before it is not your fault you got told the wrong information

I don't have a problem with what Marwell Dalek is posting, he has never pretended to be a staff member of the zoo.

He is reporting what is was told by representatives of the zoo. If that information is no longer correct, that's not his problem. If it is an issue to you, I suggest you post an update with the correct information - don't attack someone for what they have posted.

The information which is filtered through to the "Oryx club" once a month is not always 100% correct .

Well, it certainly should be - this is a professional institution is it not, and so should ensure the information it imparts is 100% correct before releasing it- even to their young members club.

It seems very odd that they provide the oryx club with the wrong details, remeber zupu if there is a problem all you need to do is correct it not make a fullscale fuss over it!

I wouldnt quite agree with that as i saw the opening of roof of the world, into africa and life in the trees as a lot more exciting, although i have got my hopes up that the new exhibit will be a sucess!

Thats true, its amazing marwell just keep pulling all the stops out each year! I wish they made some concept art for this new valley field

After last month's muddle, I'm being a bit more aware. I understand that some of the info given to us may not be 100% true, but this thread was one of my main ambitions to do here on the site when I joined, as I felt others would benefit from what I learn't reguarly. Perhaps if Zupu can act as a clairifyer for any innacuarate information, this thread can be kept in easier balance.

Meeting 15th Feburary 2009

- The first animals have been introduced to the African Valley; the herd of common waterbuck. They are currently being kept in a fenced off area to the right of the valley, and the roan antelope, who occupied the house the waterbuck now have, have moved to the waterbuck's former quaters near the coatis.
- Some sad news, and that is the death of Marwell's female takin adolescent. She died of internal problems as with the first calf, but some light is that there is some hope of Mulan being pregnant with a third calf; fingers crossed the next won't carry anymore of these internal problems that befated the previous two.
- They're have been two(?) new addax calves. I saw them in Aridlands, and they are very cute indeed.
- Geoff (Read, head of Invertabrates & Lower Vertabrates) confirmed to us in the meeting that the amphibian centre will be opened in Easter after a series of technical problems, to coincide with the African Valley.

Thank you for the update MD, really looking forward to the opening of the African bowl and the Amphibian centre.
This is very worrying news regards the infant takin, with a second calf dieing of similar symptoms as the previous, could this be a genetic problem?
Speaking of takin i wonder which will be the next UK zoo to take them on?

Especially what I'm worried about. :( Something you really don't want with a species kept only in 2 places in the UK.
