North American Common Hippopotamus Population

After the proposed renovations would they have enough space? I'm with you and would love to see a breeding pair.

Renovations would give them more space than they do have, and a breeding pair could be kept. The space will be there. A breeding pair would be great, especially to replace Happy and Patti once they pass.

Some unexpected news out of San Diego. Amahle and Funani have moved to the Urban Jungle to where I think is in the former Indian Rhino yard. The hippo exhibit is under construction at the moment and they will move back when it's done.

This does not affect the overall population list in any way so does not need to be posted here. This thread is only for posting births, deaths, transfers, and that sort of thing. Funani and Amahle have only moved to a different part of the zoo, not an entirely new zoo. Besides, like Jambo said, this is only temporary and the girls will be moving back to their main habitat eventually.

I fully agree. @RhinoHippoElephantGiraffe you could possibly place this news in the discussion thread if you really wish, but it shouldn’t belong in a population thread considering they’re only being moved temporarily.

With renovations happening to San Diego's current hippo habitat, then maybe they will be able to get a new male hippo as a future mate for Amahle once the exhibit construction is done.

San Diego already had the capacity to do that - look at how many calves they've had in recent years. There was no point in bringing in a male right now anyways as Amalhe is still way too young for that and it's easier to just be able to work the mother and calf for now and not have to be shunting a male too.

Although not news when I vistied the Guadalajara zoo they house 2.1 Hippo's the breeding pair Tartufo and Tami and their year old son.

And the Africam Safari in Pubela have had over 50 Common Hippo's born since 1972.

Cincinnati Zoo announced today (August 3rd) that Bibi is nearing labor, and can give birth today! Bibi did not go outside on exhibit this morning, meaning she could be in labor, which would be amazing. Log in or sign up to view
Are you watching and waiting for a Bibi baby hippo update? Here's the latest
I personally hope the calf is a female, but a male would also be fine. I also have a few name suggestions if the calf is male and if it is female, but I won't share them until after it is born.

It is interesting to know that Ignacio is neutered, but he did sire four calves, Pancho (1999-2007, Ellen Trout), Genevieve (2000, Adventure Aquarium), Tucker (2003, Cincinnati), and a stillborn male (2003).

He also sired Panchita (1994).

I think the reason for neutering him was due to the fact that he already had a decent amount of offspring, and they were keeping him with relatives, and didn't want him to breed with them.

Oh wow! That is amazing to hear that Fiona is officially a half-sister! Now the big question is what will the gender be? I'm hoping for a female. Today is a very special day, which is World Watermelon Day, and hippos LOVE watermelon, and it is fitting that this is the day a baby hippo is born.
Here is the link of the calf's first ever video:

These are my personal naming suggestions for the new calf at Cincinnati Zoo:

Male names:
- Shrek (Fiona is named after Fiona from Shrek)
- General (born the general weight of a newborn hippo, unlike Fiona)
- TJ (Tucker Jr.)

Female names:
- Melanie/Melonie (born on World Watermelon Day)
- Phoebe (named after mom Bibi and half-sister Fiona, but different spelling)
- Queenie (Cincinnati is known as "The Queen City")

Unisex names:
- Zuri (means "beautiful" in Swahili) (my #1 name choice)
- Finley (sounds similar to Fiona)
- Tebogo (Swahili for "we are thankful")
- Tubby (Tucker and Bibi's names combined)

I really DON'T want the baby hippo to get named "Kiboko", because 4 hippos already have that name.
