Lost, rare, and non-existant media of Indonesian zoos and public aquariums

During a conversation with @Caribbean Flamingo in Instagram, a idea just snapped into my mind when Flamingo said that he never finds any photo of Jakarta Aquarium's slow loris. So, I decided to create a thread of medias, that is photos or videos, of Indonesian zoos and aquariums that is lost, rare, or doesn't exist.

What I mean by rare is that these documentations is hard to find, while "non-existant" is medias that I'm sure doesn't exist depicting some animals, exhibits, or facilities at the zoo or aquariums that do exist.

I would greatly appreciated anyone who gave any information regarding these medias or even shared those medias if they find them.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah:

• Taman Mini's "Bekisar Museum", housing a variety of breeds of chickens, as well as Java peafowls, domestic guineafowls, and ring-necked pheasants. It have it's own small domed walkthrough aviary. It was under repairement when I last visit Taman Mini, but I presume it will be demolished during Taman Mini's, as I'm currently writing, renovation.
• The original version of Komodo Museum with Indonesian native mammals and birds, now almost exclusively display reptile and amphibian.
• Taman Reptil's smooth-fronted caiman.
• Taman Reptil's venomous snake zone, now turned into Reptile Cave.
• The original entrance of the venomous snake zone at Taman Reptil, now buried in soil of the komodo dragon exhibit.
• Elephant-nosed fish at Dunia Air Tawar.
• "Dragon goby" at Dunia Air Tawar.
• Land crab section of Dunia Air Tawar.
• American paddlefish at Dunia Air Tawar.
• Wild-caught largetooth sawfish at Dunia Air Tawar.

Ragunan Zoo:

Taman Safari Bogor:

• Greater kudu at Safari Journey.
• South African ostriches in their quarantine exhibit, which they were exhibited there for almost several years until they were moved to another quarantine exhibit near the barbary sheep exhibit until ultimately displayed in the African Panorama.
• Former inhabitants of the Rainforest Restaurant and Elephant Plaza, which include a exhibit for cotton-top tamarins as well as a pond for Amboina box turtles and several fish.
• Java mouse-deer in Taman Safari Bogor's walkthrough aviary.
• Baby chimpanzee being exhibited at Baby Zoo.
• Baby Zoo's rabbit feeding platform, now replaced by a white lion exhibit.
• Baby Zoo's Sunda leopard cat exhibit.
• Laughing kookaburra in the Australian Outback. You can still see the bird's paper cardboat cutout in the exhibit, possibly the only acknowledgement of the species in Taman Safari Bogor.
• The park's ocellated river stingray, in the aquarium located in a food court that supposed to promote Jakarta Aquarium.

• A mix of Bornean orangutan, Bornean white-bearded gibbon, lar gibbon, and an female sambar deer in one exhibit at Primate Center.
• Black swan in Primate Center, living in the moat of the Kloss's gibbon's exhibit.
• Silvery gibbon at the Primate Center.
• Ring-tailed lemur at the Primate Center.
• Horsfield's and spectral tarsiers at primate center.
• Large flying fox at Nocturnal House.
• Sulawesi bear cuscus at Nocturnal House.
• Yellow-headed water monitor, Horn's monitor, and "black dragon" water monitor in Reptile Tunnel.
• Argentine black and white tegu at Reptile Tunnel.
• Green anaconda at one of the larger exhibit at Reptile Tunnel.
• Softshell turtle at Istana Panda, in the goldfish aquarium.
• An drive thru exhibit for lemurs located near the park's exit. It has waterfall and a sign with ilustration of a lemur skull in it. The exhibit is possibly removed at some point in the mid-2010's and the lemurs were moved to Australian Outback.

Bandung Zoo:

• Bandung Zoo's "guanaco" (Could possibly just be a miss-labelled llama).

Gembira Loka Zoo:

• Greater sirens at Gembira Loka Zoo.

Surabaya Zoo:

• Surabaya Zoo's mobile app, not sure when it first launched but it disappear around 2019-2020.
• Cheetah in Surabaya Zoo, gifted from the South African government.
• Western lowland gorilla at Surabaya Zoo.
• Dugong in Surabaya Zoo.

Taman Safari Prigen:

• A nice promotional video of the park on YouTube. But for some reason, it quite hard to find the video today, so I presume it could be deleted or turned private for a unknown reason.

• Slow loris and tarsier house in Baby Zoo.

Finding Nemo exhibit at Mall Taman Anggrek with reef tanks and a circular tank housing two blacktip reef sharks

These were supposed to be promotional props for Finding Nemo. I presumed the choosing of fish in the reef tanks are inspired by the characters, like a clownfish for Nemo, a regal blue tang for Dorry, and so on (I can't remember most of the characters name). I guess the sharks is inspired by the three sharks characters in the movie.

This is the only known photo of the exhibition, there's no clear pictures of the actual tanks. Since these were for promotional purposes, these tanks were not permanent and removed.

Although it's not the full exhibit picture I itended to see, but still a good find I guess. Other stuff in the photo include sharkquarium and the aquarium's white crocodile.

This exhibit is memorable for me, I saw this when I first visit SeaWorld back in 2009. I remember my aunt tried to scares me with the python, although, if I remember, I didn't see the python. Meanwhile, the crocodiles scared the living soul out of me, since I was very young back then. It was during a feeding frenzy, they were very active and piling down on each other trying to get something. I was very close to the exhibit and seeing those that close really scares me. Really sad that I didn't get a chance to see them again ever since.

Sandtiger shark and grey reef shark in Seaworld Ancol.

I and Fargusno haven't found the sandtiger shark photo or video yet, but Fargusno managed to find a photo of an grey reef shark with a pair of blacktip reef sharks.

Seaworld's weedy sea dragon.


A "Holoquarium", basically some kind of tank where you can interact with the fish, like them nibbling our hands. The aquarium houses African cichlids. The same idea were also used for a new aquarium back in 2018 simply called "Interactive aquarium", also housing African cichlids with the exception that it's well planted and have the addition of several freshwater angelfish. The exhibit was removed during the pandemic.




The first generation of the piranha circular aquarium. At some point in the 2010's, the exhibit was turned into a saltwater aquarium for moray eels and humphead wrasses, while the piranhas were moved to a smaller aquarium. Since 2019, the exhibit displayed piranhas once again, which currently still there as of now.

In my opinion, the best piranha aquarium in Indonesia and one of the few good thing about Seaworld Ancol.

The "Innovation Aquarium" caught my eye. Turns out that it was a crocodile exhibit housing salties and false gharials, along with tilapias, though that time I asked a staff back in 2011 she said that turtles are also in there, but didn't specified what species. The current turtle/mangrove/gar exhibit could be its successor.

Also, kudos on the reef tank. Too bad it had to be demolished to make way for a smaller one. Sad to think about it. And I still fondly remember the marine file snakes they kept. The lionfish and the other venomous critters used to be in the center tank, that's now inhabited by triggerifsh. And I also saw the tunnel tank had barramundis, but the sand tiger shark was nowhere to be seen. The central tank (current piranha exhibit) was used to be a marine tank housing some large reef fishes.

BOI 1996 SeaWorld was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more awesome than 2022 SeaWorld. Awesome exhibit design, awesome collection and awesome atmosphere. Nowadays, it's just the husk of its former, Lippo Group-owned glory.
