Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

https://uk.linkedin.com/in/sharon-redrobe-obe-11139912 Don’t know if I’m reading this right but didn’t realise Sharon Redrobe was a zoo inspector for defra that must have caused some conflicts on some of the enclosures

Those types of roles are often part time supplements to existing roles, and I suspect they’re all held by folks from across the industry. Conflicts are likely avoided by limiting what zoos she’s able to inspect/represent to those with no active association to Twycross or its partners at the time.

I'd say that the zoo has had some excellent developments ( chimpanzee eden, gibbon islands, tigers etc.) but it does feel like it is getting a bit stuck again.

I’m a pass member and so disappointed at the moment with what’s happening I love the otters, prairie dogs and now martens ! It wouldn’t be so bad if twycross explained what was happening Im hoping to go today later gonna see if I can speak to a keeper whilst there but they are sometimes as rare as the animals lol
Did you manage to ask anyone?

I queried on email some of the things that have been discussed on here recently and had a reply today.
Masterplan is still on course, despite the change in CEO.
Yellow Throated Martens have passed away due to old age.
Tapirs are not leaving.
I am just relaying what Guest Services have told me, so don't shoot the messenger!
I forgot to ask about prairie dogs, so I replied and asked.

Why do people think the master plan is not on track? They literally just delivered a major milestone project and have been openly talking about the next coming within the next 12-18 months?

It’s pretty obvious why it may have slipped a year or two behind, but there has literally been no reason to doubt it won’t continue?

I don’t doubt the master plan will come to fruition in some version it’s just concerning that given they where allocated funds almost a year ago no plans are yet to be submitted, the old chimp area which on the original master plan was to be demolished is currently being renovated when obviously like all the old ape enclosures needs to be demolished as just the look of them is unsuitable regardless of the species they hold if they are to move forward combined with there lack of progressive information on the projects is cause for concern at least.

The zoo have confirmed they’re aiming to deliver the Science Centre and new Orang-Utan enclosure in 2024, so still time for planning and construction. Planning is likely to pass pretty quickly considering the council were already involved in the bid process too.

In terms of renovations, yeah it’s odd. But the same could have been said about the Bonobo move as both their old and new home also need to go. But if they’re to follow the general order of Ape developments they previously shared…

Nothing needs to be removed/demolished for them to complete phase one of the Orang-Utan enclosure or the science centre.

Next up would be Bonobo Haven, which would require the old Bonobo House and small monkeys exhibit next to it to go (so likely explains those moves).

The Bonobos moving to a new home frees up space for the Gorilla development (though they also need to move the Gorillas too unless they develop this in stages as well).

Plus we’re almost certainly going to see some smaller developments mixed in with these major ones too for the smaller species displaced as well.

This is all assuming the artwork is representative of the final plans too. As remember there was a massive difference between the initial Chimp proposals and the final development.

But a complex game of musical chairs was always going to be on the cards for some species and I expect there is still more of that to come over the next 5-10 years.

Thanks for this. Hopefully, it is all matter of moving things around to accommodate the improvements. This would also explain why the zoo has a bit of an "empty" feel at the moment. ( I don't think it does, just what others have said on here. )

Visited this afternoon and overheard something quite upsetting. A staff member was talking to a visitor about Samantha's integration into the larger chimp group. Apparently all was going well, until she challenged Jambo for dominance and she "didn't survive her injuries..." Just reporting what I heard, no idea whether this is true or not.

I think reports like this are best left until announced by the zoo.

Just got home from Twycross, first time in a few months. It wasn't overly busy.
-No sign of the Black/White Colobus monkeys; the De Brazza monkeys are now where the Colobus were and their old enclosure is empty. Colobus are now no longer listed on the website, so looks like they have left the collection.
-Saw two baby Francois langurs.
-Orangutan Kayan was outside today, seemed happy enough spinning around on the ropes. Maliku, Basuki and Batu could be seen indoors.
-Chimp Eden was closed with a sign saying it is closed until further notice. You can still see the outdoor enclosure but that was empty when we walked past.
-Most of the gorillas were quite active today.
-There seemed to be work going on at the old chimp house (near the tigers/cafe); they seemed to be cleaning out the indoors with a hose pipe so possibly getting it ready for something to go in there.

That is very odd as its one of their major exhibits. Can only think its because they are trying to integrate the small seperate group with the main one. Can't think of any other reason. They don't go outside that much though my last visit I did actually see some of them, about four, using the outdoors.

Also, does anyone happen to know about the two giraffes at the zoo?

Quick google says 2018 they had Setanta, Brad (both Rothschild's) and Epesi (Reticulated). I know Epesi passed away in 2019, so does anyone know are the two at the zoo still Setanta and Brad?

The l’hoest’s monkeys are being shown on the new park map as going in the old chimp enclosure
