ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

Does anyone know what subspecies the new cheetah are, or have Whipsnade reverted back to exhibiting generic “zoo cheetah?”

There isn't (officially at least) a generic "zoo cheetah" population in Europe - all the animals except those specifically soemmeringii are treated as pure A. j. jubatus. :)

Confirmation via email update that the new aardvarks and porcupines will be on show from 6/8.

“Meet Whipsnade's new animal residents

The meerkats have got new neighbours! Join us in welcoming two aardvarks - Nacho and Terry - and a prickle of porcupines - Tiombe and Kimya - to the family at Whipsnade Zoo. Meet them in their new spacious residence between the giraffes and zebras from Saturday 6 August.”

super excited about this! Is this a members email? As I get those but didn’t get this one?

Yes just the regular member one as far as I can see - it’s entitled ‘look how they’ve grown’ and leads with the London cubs, has a bit on the new Snowden aviary and then the whipsnade newcomers.

I’m also looking forward to seeing them!

how strange, I didn’t receive that email. Ah well

I was up at Whipsnade this afternoon, and had a great visit. Lovely weather. A couple of things to note:
- a new bison (I think it is a male) has joined the current three females
- the Przewalski’s horses were in the passage through Asia paddock that has the camel in and the Père David’s deer were in the main paddock.
- it was nice seeing the lowland anoa at the entrance to passage through Asia - it’ll be interesting to see which zoo it ends up at, as I think anoa would fit in better at London
- the porcupine, meerkat, and aardvark area was on show to gold members today, and it all looks really well done. The aardvarks and porcupines were unsurprisingly asleep indoors, but it is nice to see the area finally put to good use.
- I don’t know if it has already been mentioned, but I believe wolverine cub Helga has left the collection. Her sign had been removed and the two enclosure were connected again.
- a lot, and I mean a lot, of forestry work has gone on in the tiger enclosure, and it now looks very bare compared to what we are used to.

Do we know where the new bison (for one second I thought you meant American which confused me ha!) and Porcupines have come from?

I believe that’s the Wolverine that went to Dudley Zoo?

The horses and camels should make a very impressive mix!

Good news on the mixing. That’ll make the horses much easier to see!

Helga is indeed now at Dudley - saw her the other weekend there and she’s looking great and seemed to be enjoying her new enclosure.

Not surprised on the tiger enclosure - often stood there and thought we might have a bear situation in a strong wind! Bet it does look odd though.

Does the zoo have Cape porcupines in with the Aardvarks or is it the Cristata subspecies?

Due anytime now is after a wait of 22 months elephant calf fingers crossed number 2 for first time mum, Donna (her previous female calf, didn’t survive but was AI from woeburn bull, this time is from new male Ming Jin, his first calf) elephant keepers in the new house even have beds inbuilt so they can stay with the herd overnight underneath the viewing platform in the elephant house!

@Rosie183 I didn’t even know Donna I was pregnant. I hope her first borns (suspected) epilepsy was not genetic. It would be devastating for the Breeding Program and more importantly Donna. Loosing a Calf can have terrible reprocutions for a Cowe. Like humans Elephants go through mourning. In some instances Zoo’s leave the body of the deceased Calf with the Mum,and extended heard.
A second more long term concern is EEHV. Although Donna has not contracted it herself her bloodline has been blighted by the Virus. Donna is the only surviving offspring out 3 that have been born to Kaylee. Her Paternal Family also have a history of EEHV. Emmett alone has lost 6 Children. Counted in the 6 are Donna’s Sisters. Excluding Emmett multiple Calfs born into the Bloodline have contracted EEHV. If Donna’s Calf survives it will be momentous for Whipsnade,as they would have a Multi-Generational Heard. The only British Zoo to achieve a Multi-Generational Heard is Chester Zoo.

@Rosie183 do you know if Karishma has passed the deceased fetus that was/is in her Womb? I hope the answer is yes. If Karishma could reproduce again this would give Whipsnade Zoo 3 breeding Cowes Karishma,Donna and Elizabeth Karishma’s Daughter.

we happened to be in the elephant house with a elephant keeper in April, and when we asked who that elephant was … he said Donna, and then we are like she is expecting isn’t she. And he was like i can’t say anything blushing … but we expect hopefully late summer august , so that’s how we found out ..
He seemed to suggest Karishma did pass her last calf, but currently he hasn’t allowed Ming Jin to dominate her… As he is still a teenager and still smaller than her… so Donna and Elizabeth both have submitted to him happily, but the other adults haven’t … so they are hopeful this may spark something in Karishma, maybe even Kaylee and Elizabeth in the future. …
The elephant they swapped for Ming Jin Sam he caught EEHV and whipsnade keepers helped him survive it, that’s how Woeburn helped their only offspring Tarli survive too… so their is hope against it..

Amazing news! This'll be Ming Jung's first calf and Donna's second calf. Ming Jung's rather genetically valuable so it's great to see he's succeeded. I have my fingers crossed for a female, especially to help with succession.

I doubt (if the first calf did in fact have epilepsy); it was a genetic condition.

EEHV can be contracted by any elephant. Bloodline does not determine it, although the fact that Whipsnade's herd has been long exposed to the virus, has hopefully given useful antibodies to Donna, which she in turn will pass onto her offspring.

There's also no reason to be so negative about this.

so they are hopeful this may spark something in Karishma, maybe even Kaylee and Elizabeth in the future.

Elizabeth's still a little young to breed. Kaylee hasn't bred in thirteen years, so is probably unlikely to fall pregnant again, especially due to her age. At least she'll still be represented through Donna.

It’d be interesting to know if the four years Karishma has spent with the calf inside her would count to the approximate 10 year upper limit of breeding cessation. The rationale is cycling causes scarring of the reproductive tract; but theoretically, Karishma wouldn’t have been cycling as her body “believed” for want of a better word that she was carrying a calf.

It’s ultimately negligible as she still has another six years before she’s at the decade mark, but just an interesting point to mention!
