Maria was the mother of Simba. Her death brings the number of lions at YWP down to five. Simba, Ares, Julie, Carla and Crystal.

Maria one of the African Lionesses has passed away. My source was a Yorkshire Wildlife Park Facebook group I belong to.

That’s sad to hear. Just saw the six lions the other week - they have great enclosure spaces for viewing. It’s a great rescue story so she had a good life at YWP.

I very much doubt he will leave he is around 12 I think so getting on a bit but I think he is there youngest lion. I suppose they will just monitor his behaviour and see how he reacts to bring on his own. He might be fine in which case he coukd be left alone or they coukd potentially introduce him to Carla and Crystal. I don't think he coukd be put with Ares and Julie because area and Simba aren't related and I have heard them roaring in competition before.

In the YWP members newsletter it has been announced that Amur leopard Freya has moved to Kilbrew in Ireland.

Yes, I saw that. Sad because she is a beautiful leopard. But the breeding programme must come first. Hope she enjoys her new home and look forward to patter of tiny feet in due course.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park: More Doncaster jobs at risk as visitor attraction plans redundancies

Workers at Doncaster’s Yorkshire Wildlife Park have been warned they are at risk of redundancy as the visitor attraction seeks to slash jobs following a drop in the number of visitors.

The news from the park comes after a difficult few months for the visitor attraction after a disastrous concert by 90s pop favourites Steps saw hundreds of angry fans demanding refunds, booing and leaving early, saying they were unable to hear the Safari Nights show.

From the linked Steps article.
"I was told there was an issue with the sound at a previous concert that the YWP held.
"They really have to look at all aspects of the night."

Maybe they should just accept that they are not a music festival site and stop doing them.

YWP need to go back to doing what they're supposed to do and what they're good at and that's looking after the animals, helping/contributing with conservation and where possible taking in rescued animals.

Obviously hosting music festivals helps with finances, especially in the current climate it is much needed but sometimes sticking to the basics is more important.

That’s all well and good, but earlier this year I had a day there and was told that they were not expecting to expand in any animal departments as they needed the conference centre and hotel finished and busy to bring in funds, as there was no money for further expansion on anything and the commercial projects had to be priority.

It’s a great zoo, but the exhibits cost massive money and zoo visitors wont pay for this alone, when you go down a commercial route to fund further expansion, you need it to be a success.

Sadly the Steps debacle will have cost them financially and it’s sad that it could lead to staff losing jobs, but sadly in order to build massive zoos which cost millions , you need money coming in and co-operate and hotels and all that is the cliental they need.

Fuel and energy costs escalating means many people are holding back on luxury breaks and days out and that will be a big hit to Yorkshires plans.

Hopefully it’s just a temporary blip and they can get back on course soon.

For me it's always a shameful black mark against any zoo's credibility when they start hosting music festivals and loud late-night parties. It shows no consideration for animal welfare and often leads to a PR disaster anyway.

Twycross also held their 'Summer Sundown' event again this year with a bar and DJ-set right next to the animal exhibits, giving one of their usual baffling excuses that the musician cares for the environment and will mix animal sounds with the music.

Feel sorry for zoo staff too, who get into the job to care for animals and help conservation but are essentially working as bouncers and left to make up excuses for these events to cover for their idiot bosses.
