A male Rothschild Giraffe has arrived from Chester Zoo.
As I posted think it was last saturday.not sure now but he was kept on his own when he arrived.Does anyone know when M'boro arrived? I would have expected an announcement by now seen as this is a big arrival for the zoo? Unless they're just giving him more time to settle in and mix with the females.
When I was there on Monday I did hear somebody ask a keeper when the new giraffe arrived and the keeper said Thursday.
Let's hope they're followed by some females soon then! Another rapidly declining ungulate species that's disappointingly rare in collections, that could benefit from a strong ex situ breeding program as their scimitar-horned cousins have. And even more so, to my knowledge these 2 males were the only ones of their species in the United Kingdom - I'd imagine Knowles would be rather proud of that!
In the enclosure by the tropical house on the hardstand at the moment as they have just come in.Amazing news. Out of interest, does anyone know which enclosure they are in?
She gave birth to two in 1999 to Basela and in 2003 to Shaka I think,Basela was the first rhino born from both captive born parents in the UK.White rhino Sula has sadly been euthanized after not recovering from dental and stomach issues. She was 36yrs old. Keepers must be devastated

Tornado causes significant damage to zoo property. Fortunately missed the zoo proper.
