Marwell Wildlife Marwell 2022 News

A male Rothschild Giraffe has arrived from Chester Zoo.

Does anyone know when M'boro arrived? I would have expected an announcement by now seen as this is a big arrival for the zoo? Unless they're just giving him more time to settle in and mix with the females.

As I posted think it was last saturday.not sure now but he was kept on his own when he arrived.

When I was there on Monday I did hear somebody ask a keeper when the new giraffe arrived and the keeper said Thursday.

M'boro's arrival has just officially been announced on social media. He arrived on 8th September. Nice looking bull, be interesting to know how the females, who are all older, will take to him.

Beisa?
That is very nice!
From what I can recall, Knowles always had something for the Hippotraginae antelopes, and always prided Marwell for having all the members of that group... albeit except for the Beisa oryx.
Should Knowles still be somewhere in the universe, I imagine he has a smile on his face upon hearing this, that his collectionist goal has, in some manner, been at last fulfilled!
And even more so, to my knowledge these 2 males were the only ones of their species in the United Kingdom - I'd imagine Knowles would be rather proud of that!

Let's hope they're followed by some females soon then! Another rapidly declining ungulate species that's disappointingly rare in collections, that could benefit from a strong ex situ breeding program as their scimitar-horned cousins have.

Amazing news. Out of interest, does anyone know which enclosure they are in?

White rhino Sula has sadly been euthanized after not recovering from dental and stomach issues. She was 36yrs old. Keepers must be devastated
She gave birth to two in 1999 to Basela and in 2003 to Shaka I think,Basela was the first rhino born from both captive born parents in the UK.

She lived to a pretty good age, bless her. Seems to be at the high end of the average.
That seems to be the problem with anaesthesia on a large animal, especially an older one.
A sad loss as they are a charismatic animal.

They do seem to be spreading out rather a lot more in recent years, for what it's worth; of the 13 European collections holding the species, eight received them within the last five years, and five of these since 2020.

A species kept at Marwell up till the early 2010s.. nice to see a return!
Hopefully a few other similarly-fated species can follow...
And now this brings the total number of marmosets/tamarins species at Marwell to 7 in all - which is, as it happens, the same number of species that were held in 2010! [and likely prior/subsequent years]
[and almost all the same species - albeit with the exception of the Illiger's Tamarin, though now in its place is the Midas' Tamarin]

From what I have heard - the car park has sustained a fair bit of damage - the zoo itself has been left unscathed happily.
