Because of avian influenza and the lack of recent rainfall lowering the lake levels, Exmoor Zoo have decided to catch up their pelicans and ducks and move them off-show.

They are currently trimming vegetation and doing remedial work to the lake and then the plan is to net over the lake to protect the collection birds from contact with wild birds.

Information comes from the Exmoor Zoo Facebook page.
An unfortunate but sensible decision. Exmoor seemed to be suffering more than other UK zoos from the recent droughts. It is a particular shame as I always really liked the sheer number of wild birds at Exmoor, especially around the lake. And of course, I hope that all is well regarding the animals themselves...

I hope that the decision to net the lake is only temporary given how bad avian influenza is at the moment, but I fear it may remain for quite a while into the future...

The poles were going up when I was there 2 days ago, they look like being permanent to me.

Red pandas arrive from Bristol Zoo:

Two endangered red pandas welcomed to Exmoor Zoo | ITV News

The couple, called Shifumi and Pan, have made the move to Exmoor Zoo following the closure of Bristol Zoo Gardens in Clifton.

The three-year-old female and two-year-old male are part of a European breeding programme.

Thanks for this post. So this confirms that, as expected, Bristol's pandas have gone to Exmoor despite it previously being stated that Birstol would be sticking with the species. I assume they will get some new ones in at some point for the new site, but it seems a slightly odd way to go about it!

Incredibly sad news from Exmoor Zoo - their last Black Leopard named Zoysa has passed away. He was born at Linton Zoo, and was one of the last (not the last as mentioned in the article) back leopards in the UK; the last confirmed individual being at Lincolnshire wildlife Park, though Heythrop certainly had a young male in recent years.

Absolutely tragic to have lost Exmoor's most iconic species! He was one of the most beautiful big cats which I had ever seen and a highlight of my every visit to the collection. The zoo will feel very different without its black leopards, although I am curious to see what they decide upon come this winter. He will be missed dearly and remembered fondly.

Went to the zoo today and had a lovely time!
Managed to see most of the highlights of the zoo like the cats, the dogs and the wolverines.
Also saw the honey badger at the end, which was lucky.

A few things to tell;
  • Good progress of the snow leopard enclosure which according to the map, they should come at March 2023
  • Managed to took a photo of the hyena enclosure today, delighted to say that it will be spotted hyenas

  • Saw a glimpse of the shoebill which was really lucky.
  • They says that a new carnivore will be replacing the old leopard enclosure. Could be wrong, but that is all the general update of the zoo.
Thank you!

Are you able to upload your photos to the gallery please? They haven't worked in the post :)
