An unfortunate but sensible decision. Exmoor seemed to be suffering more than other UK zoos from the recent droughts. It is a particular shame as I always really liked the sheer number of wild birds at Exmoor, especially around the lake. And of course, I hope that all is well regarding the animals themselves...Because of avian influenza and the lack of recent rainfall lowering the lake levels, Exmoor Zoo have decided to catch up their pelicans and ducks and move them off-show.
They are currently trimming vegetation and doing remedial work to the lake and then the plan is to net over the lake to protect the collection birds from contact with wild birds.
Information comes from the Exmoor Zoo Facebook page.
I hope that the decision to net the lake is only temporary given how bad avian influenza is at the moment, but I fear it may remain for quite a while into the future...
