Milwaukee County Zoo Milwaukee County Zoo News 2022

Things that I came across today while reading thru things about the future of the zoo. One is that they are planning on keeping the hippos at the zoo while they work on phase 3. Also they are aiming to be able to house one male two females and a baby.

Next year they are going to have an outdoor ice age experience.

Also they are going back and revisiting the master and strategic plan for the zoo for the next 7-10 years. Which probably goes to why we haven’t heard much about there plans for the future as much.

I didn't think there was room for having a baby hippo

A couple of updates;
The former jellyfish/cuttlefish/plastic trash tank in ARC had no water but a ladder in it today, probably something moving in soon.
In Small Mammals, there is a new baby prehensile-tailed porcupine! Very cute and very small, probably not more than just a couple weeks old since there hasn't even been a press release about it.
It's been a longtime coming but the Prevost's Squirrels have finally arrived! I feel like there's been discussion on and off about Prevost's squirrels coming for the past year or two. I unfortunately didn't see the actual animals, just the sign for them.

In other news, here's an article from the zoo on Bozeman the bear's move to the former polar bear exhibit: A New Habitat for Grizzly Bear Bozeman - Milwaukee County Zoo
And on the pelicans, flamingos, and crested screamers going back inside due to avian flu concerns: Several Bird Species are Moved Indoors as a Pre-caution - Milwaukee County Zoo
Also, two new heifers (cows) have been added to the Family Farm:

I feel like the two tanks (jellyfish and the pacific tank) keep taking turns on which one is up and the other is down, I wonder what’s going on with them?

I was wondering what was going on with the flamingos because they were off exhibit on several nice days that I was there. I wonder why they didn’t take some of the other birds off exhibit like they did before.

So do they have three brown bear exhibits now? How many bears total?

The Pacific tank still had water in it on my visit today, but I agree, it has been empty for quite some time now.

I was there last week and it had some fish and items in it. I’m just wondering if we are getting cuttlefish or jellyfish now in the other tank, and if so why can’t we keep anything in there for very long?

There are three bear exhibits, two labeled "grizzly bear" with four bears total (3 in one exhibit, 1 in the other) and another exhibit with "Alaskan brown bear" named Boris.
I thought it was previously said Milwaukee only had grizzlies -- the article about Bozeman's move confirms as you said that Boris is still kicking, which is good news. Even two different kinds of brown bear is still a better variety than only grizzlies.

Milwaukee County Zoo Visit Report, 11/25/2022

Made a quick trip to the zoo today. I don't have much to say besides one update so I'm going to keep this very short.

There is at least one Prevost's squirrel now on exhibit in the small mammal house. They only have access to one exhibit in the building and according to a keeper it spends most of its time on top of a large artificial tree in the middle of the exhibit. Here is a poor photo as evidence.

Elsewhere there were a few interesting animal highlights. This was my first time seeing the recently acquired group of scimitar-horned oryx and they are very impressive species. I know they are extremely common both in and out of the AZA, but that doesn't make them any less striking. The family of river otters has ballooned quite a bit since the last time I saw them and they were great fun to watch manuring throughout their various pools. The highlight of the visit was seeing the prehensile-tailed porcupine baby in the small mammal house. Him and his parents were climbing all over the exhibit with the armadillo scurrying around beneath it which made for a fun show. Overall, a pleasant visit for a brief time.

Thank you. While the day room sounds like possibly an improvement, the nocturnal room has certainly changed since I was last there.

Would anyone else prefer if the zoo kept these species, rather than eventually changing it to that North American-themed area?
