Zoobat Collections (N. America)

The last Straw-Colored Fruit Bat at the Lake Superior Zoo has recently passed away, leaving the zoo with no species of bat left. I doubt they will be looking to re-acquire the species anytime soon.

Egyptian Fruit Bat is no longer present at the Shell Factory and Nature Park. The exhibit they used to be held in was empty and unsigned, so I can only assume they have departed the facility.

Bats I remember seeing as a kid at the defunct Bat Zone at the Cranbrook Museum of Science and related Organization For Bat Conservation ambassador animal programs. Detroit acquired its bats from OFBC when it shut down, so these bats have presumably all been moved to other facilities. I think there were more species than I remember. They also had other species like a Linne's two toed sloth (the one currently housed in Detroit), a "domestic" (pet-bred and brown and white morph) striped skunk, flying squirrels and Eastern screech owls.
Big brown bat
Malayan flying fox
Common vampire bat
Straw colored fruit bat
Jamaican fruit bat
Egyptian fruit bat
Maybe Rodrigues flying foxes? Also there were more insectivore bats than just the big brown bat but I don't remember species because I was in elementary school.

We're starting to come up on the annual Halloween update for this list, everyone! Read over what I have on the previous page and let me know if you see any additions/subtractions to be made.

Assiniboine Park Zoo has 2 Indian Fruit Bats (Pteropus giganteus), and they still have the Greater Spear-nosed Bat (Phyllostomus hastatus) and Seba’s Short-tailed Bat (Carollia perspicillata). Unsure about either of their population size.

Happy Halloween everyone! Here's this year's update for captive non-insectivorous bats on display in the US and Canada. Of note, one species - the Lesser Dog-faced Fruit Bat (Cynopterus brachyotis) - did not appear on Lubee's USDA stock list this year, so it's possible/likely that we've lost a fruit bat from the continent (unfortunate, but predictable).

As with last year, this is only those that I could confirm are on display to the public.

I'm curious where you got Shamba as a holder of Straw-colored Fruit Bat? They have no place to put a bat. The same people own Timbavati Wildlife Park, so is it possible the animals are there?

Except for the big brown (which I don't keep track of, but cool to know) was posted in my recent list already. In the future, please read over what's already been noted so you can contribute new information rather than giving blanket info from an entire state.

How many gray-headed flying foxes does the Lubee Bat Conservancy have (left)? Is this a phase out species for the facility? It struck me as odd that Lubee is phasing out some of their rare bat species because they pride themselves in having such a great collection (though I suppose it isn't that weird because there are so many facilities doing this right now) and it makes me to wonder which species will not be kept here in the long run.
