Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

Does anyone have any advice of best times to see the paca at Elmwood Park Zoo? I am planning to visit this weekend, and paca is the main target for me (I have been to this zoo a few times but it was before they added pacas).

i went last week and saw it, although it wasn’t active. It easy to miss but it was under one of the shade structures during my visit

I know I’m super late, but they are most active between 4 and 5. There is usually only one on exhibit at a time. When not active, you can typically still see one sleeping under one of the shade structures. The one in the corner, closest to the porcupines, is their favorite spot.

As for news, unfortunately one of the Jacob Sheep, Mercutio, has died of old age. He was the one with 4 large, symmetrical horns. He was over 12 years old.

Thank you very much! We did manage to see an active paca, it was, as you said, soon after 4 PM!

Elmwood Park Zoo receives $30 million gift for animal hospital – thereporteronline

Elmwood Park Zoo is pleased to announce that a donor has given a landmark $30 million gift to fund the construction of a new animal hospital and welcome center. The gift both honors the zoo’s upcoming 100th anniversary in 2024, and supports the zoo’s ambitious $150 million master plan.

At over 17,000 square feet, Elmwood Park Zoo’s animal hospital will be one of the largest and most advanced exotic animal care facilities in the nation.

The zoo have updated their website with details of their masterplan:

Phase Two:

Phase Three:

Future Planning:

More information under each of these headings can be found on the website.

The zoo is going to be closed for January and February. The zoo received a $30 million anonymous gift (!) and will be building the new animal hospital / welcome center building starting in January, in hopes of having it complete by 2024 (their 100th anniversary). To build it, they'll need to tear down the current entrance and gift shop, so they'll be closing to get started on that and then using a new, temporary entrance away from the construction starting in March. The zoo does have a second entrance but it's at the opposite end of the park, away from the parking lots.

Maybe I'm mistaken because of the name?
There also was a picture of one on their old map, despite them ever keeping them.

On December 15th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) American bison named Francis passed away age 18 due to losing the ability to walk.

The zoo also announced that their (1.0) black-footed ferret named Rey passed away at the age of 6 shortly after surgery that removed a cancerous mass from his tail. The zoo will acquire black-footed ferrets again as part of the master plan.

3.0 alpacas moved into the area across from the playground, where the train used to be. Their names are Redemption Song (white), Lyrical Gangsta (brown), and Ringo Starr (black).

... That's what they chose to name the brown one? Yikes
