Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

On May 24th, the zoo announced that their (1.0) yellow-crowned Amazon parrot named Rex passed away at age 43 due to a rapid deterioration of health from chronic gastrointestinal disease.

Hi all. Visited the zoo today (first time in around a month) and have some updates for cool stuff I saw.

1: The sloth building is looking amazing. I saw it from the inside on my last visit but they had the glass down so you could see the birds from the outside. I really could only see the scarlet ibis but the exhibit is wonderful.

2: The Lowland Paca were off exhibit due to veterinary care. I find these guys really really charming so I hope they are okay!

3: The black footed ferret was still off exhibit or at least I couldn't see him. Im not sure if I am unlucky or it hasnt been on exhibit but im super bummed out! Really want to knock that species of my species list.

4: Birds were largely all out save for the ducks. Rhea were out and about as were the Nene.

Elmwood seemingly has a bright future and may become my go to spot over Lehigh Valley.

The black-footed ferret should still be on-exhibit, it just almost never comes out of its tunnel.

He is still on exhibit but he’s nocturnal so he’s usually sleeping, and sometimes he chooses to sleep in the back area of his enclosure out of view. He was sleeping on top of the blankets for once on Thursday.

I’m not sure how close you live, but ZooAmerica also has black-footed ferrets if you would like to check them off your list!

I also totally forgot but the Muntjac was not on exhibit. It looks like final touches were still being made to the enclosure.

The Muntjac’s name has been revealed! His name is Colby.

Also there are at least 4 baby prairie dogs, though it’s probably 5. I have counted 4 out at once but I think there are two litters, one of three and one of two.

I received an e-mail that announced the arrival of a pair of Emperor Tamarins that will reside in the Wildlife Lodge which was said to be "in the final stages of its overhaul." Members could visit them starting this Monday, but no opening date was specified for the rest of us.

Has the new rainforest exhibit opened to the general public yet?

It's sorta open. You can go in with a employee to see the sloth and some of the birds, but you cant walk through the aviary yet. It's gorg and I cant wait to see it fully open

On July 11th, the zoo announced they have acquired (2.0) emperor tamarins named Vinny and Valentino which are on exhibit in the Wildlife HQ building. The zoo also announced they are in the final stages of overhauling the building, and will be placing new reptiles and amphibians into their exhibits over the next couple of weeks.

Article on the zoo’s masterplan (100 year vision):

Elmwood Park Zoo shares 100-year vision ahead of centenary

The project will unfold in stages - the “welcome center, hospital administration, offices and entry plaza” will be the first areas completed, before the expansion of the campus across the neighbouring creek. In addition, the zoo plans to improve its Asian, North American, and African habitats, as well as its Aquatic Mammals exhibits.

The zoo announced today that their prairie dogs are leaving soon to make room for new construction. Despite how common prairie are dogs in zoos, I'm disappointed by the news. I can't say I'm thrilled over the contemporary style of their future entrance, either.

The prairie dogs will be moving on to another zoo. If they stay local, I could see them going to the Lehigh Valley Zoo, since their prairie dog exhibit has been empty for a while.

Big, exciting news that I am finally allowed to talk about! (I am an intern at the zoo)

The Chacoan Peccaries have had two babies! Sexes yet unknown, but they are now 7 days old. The path to the peccaries will be opened today, though they might not be out much due to how hot it is.

On July 22nd, the zoo officially announced the birth of the (0.0.2) Chacoan peccaries and stated they are now on exhibit.

Harmony Hideaway (the aviary where the sloth is) is now open to enter provided there are enough staff available (it is usually closed around lunchtime and after 3, but this varies.)

The chickens are also now back in the barnyard.

The eagles probably won’t be moved back to their enclosure for a while though.

Does anyone have any advice of best times to see the paca at Elmwood Park Zoo? I am planning to visit this weekend, and paca is the main target for me (I have been to this zoo a few times but it was before they added pacas).
