A recently published scientific paper has shown that two male geladas at NaturZoo Rheine engage in a solitary play behaviour previously only seen in macaques. The behaviour involves scraping a stone, or pieces of stone, over a hard surface in order to release colour. The research suggests that the drawing-like behaviour can be characterized by its self-rewarding nature.
On June 3rd, the black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) had triplets. This is a first breeding for the zoo, as they kept a bachelor group up until 2019.
