A recently published scientific paper has shown that two male geladas at NaturZoo Rheine engage in a solitary play behaviour previously only seen in macaques. The behaviour involves scraping a stone, or pieces of stone, over a hard surface in order to release colour. The research suggests that the drawing-like behaviour can be characterized by its self-rewarding nature.
