Species no longer held/nearly gone from US zoos

Well then @SwampDonkey, in that case, do they still happen to have the drills on display; or is that no longer the case?
As far as I am aware they are, they posted on Facebook on December 15:
Zoo Atlanta is the only place in North America that currently houses drill monkeys. Enwe, a large male, lives with his two sisters, Achi and Drew. Completing the troop is Amaka, the daughter of Drew.

Granted that does not say they are on display, but I think they are.

Ah... finally an animal mentioned that I'd be happy to see gone from US Zoos, and not disappointed!
Not a fan huh? I have a feeling those will crop up again before too long.

Reading this thread I didn't know so many dolphin species were present in the USA.

There were three Commerson's dolphins at the time of the post mentioning two on this thread. Is this no longer the case?

one remaining holder:
1. African clawless otter - Metro Richmond Zoo
2. red-bellied lemur - San Francisco Zoo
3. Puerto Rican parrot - There probably are some on the island, but the only ones in captivity that I'm aware of are at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago
4. Persian leopard - geriatric animal at the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound

one remaining holder but might continue in the United States of America:
1. Vietnamese sika deer - The Wilds
2. Antillean manatee - Dallas World Aquarium
3. lance-tailed manakin? - Dallas World Aquarium
4. Malayan sambar - San Diego Zoo Safari Park
5. Peruvian spider monkey - Gladys Porter Zoo

soon to be gone from the United States
1. Calamian deer
2. Gray's crowned guenon
3. black-banded jackal - may not be gone soon from less reputable facilities but definitely in AZA programs

no longer in the United States of America
1. L'Hoest's monkey

With both Memphis' and National's panda contracts ending at the end of the year, Giant Panda will likely be gone from US zoos very soon. This will leave Atlanta as the last holder in the country.

What is your basis for saying the species will be leaving Smithsonian?

I was up close and personal with Juan, Pepe and Ross yesterday (Commerson dolphin).

And there used to be more dolphin species not long ago when Mote Aquarium had a pantropical spotted and spinner dolphin on display.

When did Wilds get Vietnamese Sika? Doesn't Bronx have a rare sika as well?

Didn't know MRZ had the last African clawless. Saw them too

And speaking of Bronx, are they single species holders as well?

Giant Pandas are over rated (Koala too) but I personally don't want them completely gone

Smithsonian is losing the current bears. It is speculation to say they won't get new ones, though I wouldn't be surprised if the political situation between countries makes it more difficult. Though given the pandas are pretty symbolic of Smithsonian in general, it's hard to imagine them not getting new bears.

"The zoo is working hard to bring in new animals" or variations thereof has been said a lot regarding the pandas. I think it is important to remember, though, that San Diego has been "working hard to bring in new animals" for about three years now.

Where has it been shared that their current bears are leaving?

Dolphin Research Center currently has the only pantropical spotted.

Wilds has had the Sika for several years now. Bronx has Formosan.

It's not the last African clawless, just last on display. Their other one died two or three years ago.

The Wilds has had Vietnamese Sika for quite a while, not sure how long but definitely over five years now, at least. San Diego also holds this taxa bts. Bronx has a couple Formosan Sika left.

Giraffe Ranch in Florida has African Clawless Otter as well as it happens.

Bronx is the single exhibiter of Ring-Tailed Vontsira and Blue Whistling-Thrush as two examples.

@TinoPup did Wilds have the Vietnamese 6-7 years ago?

@ThylacineAlive Thanks! I was gearing that question to you lol. Completely forgot the ring tail mongoose especially and I thought there was another private holder of Cape Clawless

This is really good news. Do you work with them occasionally or did you pay for it?

I thought I wrote this in a previous post. I guess not. :)

These animals are actually hybrids with another otter species. They were received by some nitwit who thought it would be cool to cross them. I think it is the Asian small-clawed otter but I could be wrong.

@wildboar I didn't see your previous posts.

The Commersons are one of my favorite species I've been around so I visit them when I can

What other species are the Formosan kept with?
