ZooChat Challenge Global 2023 - 10th Anniversary Special!

Hmm, I didn't realise it was a split (so I was thinking of it as being found over quite a bit of Indochina). I don't know if it still counts as an island endemic though, given that Wikipedia says it is extirpated in mainland China and hence now only found in Hainan and Hong Kong.

This is a pretty important point with relevance to lots of species. Tasmanian devils were on the Australian mainland until c.3000 years ago (and possibly much later), for instance.

I figured it was allowed since I was allowed to count Tasmanian Devil last time.

I'd be inclined to disallow recent mainland extinctions (eg this turtle) and allow prehistoric mainland extinctions (eg devils) ["prehistoric" to mean pre-historical records not "dinosaur prehistoric"].

But it would probably be easier to just allow anything now only found on islands, regardless of time-frame I guess.

Okay, some catching up to do..

@CrashMegaraptor the owl does not count for Island Hoppers for the reason @Chlidonias explained.

@Kalaw the Bona Fide Rarity Hunter bonus can be from the same zoo as the Bona Fide Rarity Hunter, though please keep it to the same species. I was also confused here when I saw the frog counted for one but the sunbird counted for the other :p

@Coelacanth18's suggestion of the using the spoiler function is a great one, and while not required it would be a lot easier I think to keep things organized.

@birdsandbats Only one Corvus for the Thylo's Top 20. You can use multiple species for Check Your Feeders, though obviously you don't need to.

@Chlidonias mainland Australia does not count, but Australian islands do count. Just how islands like Hainan, Sardinia, and Puerto Rico will be counted. Tasmanian Devil counts in that regard.

@Corangurilla As mentioned by others, the verbiage is due to Bat-Eared Fox and the grey foxes not belonging to Vulpini. For simplicity's sake I still will allow them here since they are commonly known as foxes.

@ChunkyMunky pengopus I was thinking the winner would be counted as the person who's completed the most and has the highest total by the end of the year. I was not going to do winners by each individual game.

@birdsandbats Golden Coin Turtle does not count towards this challenge. In general, I agree with @Chlidonias in that prehistoric ranges should not be considered for Island Hoppers, but historic ranges will be. Recent mainland extinction still disqualify a species from Island Hoppers, so Golden Coin Turtle would not count even if it wasn't still native to a small area of mainland China. The Tasmanian Devil will still count in this regard as well.

@OskarGC "blue" poison dart frogs are just a morph of Dyeing Poison Dart Frog, so you'll be at 1 for See, Don't Touch.

Thank you for your response! That makes perfect sense; I will remove the frog from my list when I next post an update.

Speaking of which, I realise that I entirely forgot Brazilian Tanager for Thylo's Top 20. Is it unfair to add species that you forgot to list after having already made your original post? I understand if that is the case.

“Bona Fide Rarity Hunter" (1/3)

1. Scarlet-chested sunbird, Chalcomitra senegalensis

Forgot about the bonus:

Bonus Bona Fide Rarity Hunter (1/1) COMPLETE

1. Scarlet-chested sunbird, Chalcomitra senegalensis

Should be the one ones in captivity on Earth...?
I'm guessing the ruling on this one is based on whether someone else can disprove it...

That is how it played out in the NA challenge. There was also a rule that after 3 mistakes you are disqualified from the challenge, but I don't think that stipulation has been mentioned to apply to this challenge.

@ChunkyMunky pengopus I was thinking the winner would be counted as the person who's completed the most and has the highest total by the end of the year. I was not going to do winners by each individual game.
So the highest number of completed trials wins? Meaning open-ended trials or trials that nobody ends up completing will only be important for scoring in the event that there is a tie in the most fully completed trials?

Not that I expect to win, I am just curious about how the scoring would work with the adjustments from the NA challenge.

“Bona Fide Rarity Hunter: see at least 3 species exhibited by only 1 zoo in the US and Canada (can only count 1 species per zoo)"
This one I’m going to edit a bit more, both since it’s hard and because naturally I’m not making everyone visit American zoos to win this.

I am changing the challenge to mean seeing 3 species exhibited by only 1 zoo within your continent, not globally. Again, you are not required to see 3 species exhibited by only 1 zoo each worldwide, just 3 species exhibited at only 1 zoo within the continent you’re participating in. If you visit multiple continents, this challenge will apply to whichever continent the zoo you’re visiting is based in. The one species per zoo rule will remain in effect so people can’t win it with one visit to their local native rescue center.
Question for New Zealand: in the context of this challenge is "continent" taken to mean "Oceania" (i.e. a collection of islands: Australia, NZ, Pacific Islands, etc) or are NZ and Australia counted separately. So, as an example, there is one elephant in NZ - does that count or does it not because there are also elephants in Australia? Or the Long-beaked Echidna at Taronga - also kept in PNG - so would that count or not count?

Generally in the challenges it seems from the general wording that "Oceania" is the area to be used (Aus, NZ, etc combined) but in some challenges NZ is specified as being separate to Australia.

Generally, Oceania does refer to Australia, New Zealand, ect. combined. For a few challenges, I gave NZ different requirements to try and make the game a little more inclusive to you and any other New Zealanders who may play. If it's not specified separately, NZ is included in Oceania.

Thylo's Bonus Challenge

Holy dooley, that's a lot... I started writing this up like 3 or 4 hours ago and I'm just posting it now...
Hopefully I can get to some more interesting zoos this year. The Chicago Trio of Brookfield, Lincoln Park, and Shedd are all places I want to visit, but haven't been able to visit since I joined Zoochat (darn college work keeping me in Wisconsin and darn family keeping me in Arizona...).
Anyways, good luck, fellow competitors!
