Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

The Tierpark counted 1.6 mio visitors in 2022. This comes surprisingly close to the really strong year 2019 with polar bear cub Hertha which was the best year after the end of the GDR-era. I am really surprised about this comeback. I had hoped for at least 1.3 mio visitors but nothing close to 1.5 mio or even more...

Taken all the new attractions, 2023 should turn out similarly strong.

At least new for me, is the confirmation that rhinos will be back at the Tierpark after they were removed from the elephant house plans. However it is not clear which specie the exhibit will be for with pictures of white rhino in masterplan while black rhino have long been planned and with stronger breeding needs. I also like to see that Somalian Wil ass are not given up and included in a desert theme.

I am not a big fan to see that the giant aviary plans are kept. I would prefer several smaller aviaries, much better suited to birds requirements.
Would be curious also to see more details about what would be planned for Sumatran tigers and polar bear/sealions area.

I’m still hoping for both black ánd white! I’m even hoping for indian rhino in that empty huge field across the kiangs as an extention of the Himalaya section.

And I’m already looking forward to al new species and possibilities for filling the current enclosures once that African region is finnished and animals move from their old to this new section. Interesting
times!

Berlin seems to house different species (with exceptions for species that need more space given the rarity in Europe or because they're more important from a conservation POV, such as the Chinese water deer) in its two parks and they complement each other, so I don't see why they would use such space for a species already highly anticipated for the zoo in the Tierpark: I think it's more likely they'll use that area you mention for Hoofstock as the park has a good history (and passion may I add) with these animals.
And I'll also add that while white rhinos are very popular animals and breed well I personally think the population is growing too fast... and we should prioritize black rhinos as of now.

German zoo enthusiasts also were quite surprised by the return of Rhinos. And even though Lions have been on and off the official communication, nobody really knew if or when they would actually return. Given the strong focus on endangered species, I would expect them to go for Black Rhinos. Pictures can be misleading, as people often take what they can find and then don't always get double checked. But of course, I'm just speculating here as well.

Same here. I'd actually love to have one more or less large aviary for each continent or even zone. They could for instance quite easily turn the whole penguin area into a large aviary including other African sea birds and may be even some (free roaming) mammals, turtles etc. Then they could have an aviary near or around the gibbon island, the lemure forest and so on. This would perfectly complement the large mixed-species exhibits for ungulates etc.

Would be curious also to see more details about what would be planned for Sumatran tigers and polar bear/sealions area.

I would guess they may still want to connect the two outside enclosures at the Brehm building, giving the tigers most or all of the inside court area.

Not so sure about polar bears and sea lions, though. This may well become rather costly.

if this is the case then what would happen to the rhinoceros house in Zoo Berlin that held black rhinoceros?

It is also a bummer that the babirusa enclosure is by the patagonia restaurant (a detail that I surprisingly missed on my visit last year) rather than near the ABH.

Is there much indication on species for the large aviary?

@markmeier i completely agree that it would be much nicer to see more smaller geographically themed aviaries around the site. Seems strange to go to so much effort to theme the mammal areas of the bird aviary will not be also!

Only those present in photos, so hyacinth macaws, wattled cranes and white-handed gibbon, which could very well be just "placeholders" to represent candidates as perhaps it's just in the planning phase and no clear idea is in mind.

Minor point but isn't that a siberian crane, not wattled?

Which species will be displaced by the building of the new lion and rhino areas?

As far as I can see, the lions will receive the enclosures of barbary macaques and the ungulate species next to them (I can't remember which one this is right now).

The rhinos seem to receive the space of both African buffaloes and African forest buffaloes as well as Mishmi takins. The buffaloes would certainly be missed, though. At least, there are also African forest buffaloes at Berlin zoo.

Well it's a plan for up to 2035, animals will probably be moved around the parks, it's not said that they'll leave (nor that they'll remain too)

Shame the buffalo won’t stay. Very impressive animals and very unrepresented.

Generally speaking, you are right. But some of these projects are scheduled much earlier than that:

AFRICA
- Savannah exhibit and Giraffe Trail: early 2023
- Elephant Complex: 2024 (delayed: no earlier than 2025)
- Lions: 2024-2026
- Rhinos + Gerenuks: 2026-2028
- Desert Exhibit: 2028-2030

ASIA
- Otters, Barbirusas, Black Crested Macaques: end of 2023
- Extension for Sumatran Tigers: ?

NORTH AMERICA:
- Polar Bears and Sea Lions: ?

AVIARY: ?

FARM: ?

SCIENCE CENTER: ?

When the Savannah is finished, a number of animals will move and create some free space anyways. So let's see how they go about everything...

They just celebrated the topping out ceremony for the giraffe trail. Apparently, they still plan to present the Savannah complex by Spring 2023.
