Georgia Aquarium Georgia Aquarium News

I visited the aquarium today and here are a few updates.

The River Scout gallery has been closed for refurbishments since January 30, 2023 and will remain closed until March 1, 2023.

There's a peacock mantis shrimp on exhibit in the Tropical Diver gallery.

A silky shark is in the "Sharks" gallery. Although they were originally planned to be in there, they were moved to Ocean Voyager, though I'm not sure why. There are still silky sharks in Ocean Voyager, too.

According to an employee I spoke with, their tiger shark has been acting strange, randomly speeding around the tank. They're watching her and hoping she will be able to stay.

There is a newish giant Pacific octopus in the Rocky Reef habitat, as another employee stated she has been at the aquarium for a couple months.

Would not be shocked if they were worried about someone else eating the silky shark.

Do they only have the one tiger shark? I thought there were more...

I think there were more before as well, because I really feel like I saw more than one when I first saw the gallery. They're just down to the one now if that's the case.

As of last summer they have three -although not full size just yet. I've heard through the grapevine from colleagues at the Aquarium that they aren't the best exhibit animals since they tend to stay up at the surface away from the viewing windows.

Oh man, I hope the tiger shark can stick around until I make it there in the summer.

Did the other 2 die then? I really hope both the last tiger shark and whale shark are still around by the time I get a chance to visit.
I hope they are all around for a very long time, past their life expectancy. Not because I want to see them, but because they deserve good long lives.

Of course I want it/them to have long lives, that is without question. Just because I desire to see them before they pass doesn't imply otherwise and is insulting to call out.

That goes without saying, but many of us don't have the option to see animals like Whale Sharks or Tiger Sharks in the wild, so I don't think their is anything wrong with having a desire to see them, but of course want them to live long lives.

I must apologize profusely. I did not mean to insult anyone and I'm sorry @King of Komodo Dragons and @SwampDonkey for attacking you. My intent was only to express my hope for the sharks to have extensive, healthy lives but I ended up unintentionally implying that the two of you only wanted her to live so that she could be viewed, and of course you don't, so again, I'm sorry.

I will probably never see whale sharks or tiger sharks in the wild either :)

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words. Seriously, it's people like you that make this a great forum. :)

I didn't think to ask her what happened to the other tiger sharks, we got pretty lost in the conversation about zebra shark conservation and other things about sharks, but she seemed optimistic about the tiger shark staying so holding onto hope.

There are still three whale sharks in the aquarium, so you should definitely be able to see them.

I was under the impression there were only two remaining. Unless they quietly acquired a third one recently this should still be the case.
Did another one pass recently? If so I didn’t know about that one somehow. I know Trixie died a couple years ago, but that would’ve left them at three now. If there are only two now it can be hard to tell since the exhibit is so large.

Tiger sharks grow fairly quickly, and very big eventually, so I've wondered what the plan was long-term. I know when Monterey was considering it the plan was to keep juveniles for a set period of time.
