Ark Wildlife Park Ark Wildlife Park News

Only the genuine ones at the moment (All Things Wild), but the wonky ones may be ticked off by the end of the year as well. :)
I've seen the "wonky" and "proper" ones ;)

Where were your wonky ones seen? I've got tentative plans for Wild Discovery which should get me my wonky tick! ;) I'm assuming you got your proper one from the same place as me? :p

You'll need to go to Shepreth for the wonky ones; see, for instance, this photograph:

Seems like people have been telling me fibs then, thanks! :p

2022 is shaping up to be a big year for the Ark with lots of new arrivals and projects going on!

A second Bobcat has recently joined the collection; the new arrival is a male named Floyd, who has already been put with female Jinx as a companion.

Coming soon - 5 Barbay Macaques; one of which was confiscated whilst being smuggled, the rest are ex-pets. Also expected to arrive at the end of June are a couple more cats which the states are sometimes called 'Africa's most beautiful feline'.

Also the original Raccoon enclosure seems to have been dismantled and will be replaced by a new, larger enclosure for the same species.

All of the above news comes from the official Ark Wildlife Park Facebook page.

Four Kinkajous arrived in the early hours of this morning! They will be given a week to settle in before their new exhibit, 'Kinkajou Cavern', officially opens on 11th February. This will apparently be the only nocturnal house in Lincolnshire.

That is great news! However, this is not the only nocturnal house in lincolnshire if the Seba’s short tailed bat exhibit at Woodside is counted as one

Kinkajou Cavern is an awful name, aside from the fact kinkajous aren't troglodytes, caverns are dark, cold and dank places. That said, it's great to see another holder of kinkajous.

That did actually cross my mind, although I think calling that a 'house' would be a bit of a stretch, 'cupboard' would probably be more like it! To be honest though first or not, I'm not that bothered... its another great addition to the Ark and its giving these animals a good new home.

Indeed, a great acquisition:)

Had my first visit to The Ark today. Admittedly I was drawn in by the various small cat species housed there, but I thoroughly enjoyed the day, despite the strong winds and on-off rain.

The bobcats were on good form, very active and one had a good roll around on the floor after one of the keepers had sprinkled paprika through the mesh! Both servals also active and the jungle cat but to a lesser extent. My first time seeing a jungle cat so that was special. The two caracals were active in the morning when being fed, but I didn’t see them for the rest of the day, despite braving the winds several times to return to their enclosure. The lynx was out in the afternoon but mainly kept to the back of the enclosure. The jaguarundi was a no show, although I did get a brief glimpse of a brown behind darting back into the house when it clocked me coming down the path! All foxes were clearly visible which was also lovely to see, and the savannah cat was a refreshing sight. Another ‘new’ one for me.

One of the genets was active right at the end of the day. I believe it was the common one, but my knowledge of genets isn’t good enough to 100% confirm.

The yellow and banded mongooses were both active in their enclosures. The porcupine came out in the afternoon to lay under its heat lamp. The two skunks also graced us with their presence towards the end of the afternoon.

I went into Kinkajou Cavern three times, and after waiting a couple of minutes each time, a kinkajou came right up to the window to peer out at us! Most people who followed us in didn’t have the patience to wait, but it was worth it each time!

The macaques were all inside but easily visible through the windows. All seemed to be enjoying a hearty feed of vegetables!

The only complete no shows were the civets. We didn’t see either species and went back to check several times.

But all in all it was a successful day. The variety of species is what drew me in and despite the place being quite small, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I stayed from opening till close and never once got bored!

Had a good visit to Ark wildlife park today. Also went to Wolds and LWP but still had a great couple of hours wandering around.

First time seeing the caracals and that was a bit of a treat as not a cat I see every often. Took a quick snap of the new enclosure. Pretty good job including a viewing window and climbing frames and a nice change from the poly tunnel structures - more like the lynx and fox areas. It’s good to be able to go around the back of the fox and serval enclosures too on the way to the caracals makes for some good viewing. There was a well done colourful banner near the enclosure too with pictures of some of the cats.

There were more macaques than on my previous visit so enjoyed quite a bit of time at that end of the park which was pretty quiet. As usual the fox fix didn’t disappoint - great to see the arctic foxes still white though some signs of coats starting to change.

I hadn’t seen the civet before so enjoyed that too.

Didn’t see much in the nocturnal area - there were some rides in the barn behind that were pretty loud so either the animals were a bit put off or I was!

Overall an interesting visit again and a lot to enjoy among the rescues / confiscations / ex lab and pet surrenders.

Thanks for posting this mini review - the caracal enclosure looks good! Pleasing to see a viewing window in there too. I look forward to hopefully seeing it before too long, and the back view of the 'carnivore row' as well. Also glad you got some good fox viewing; you may be aware that Sox the red fox passed away recently, they still have lots left though but he will be greatly missed as he was a big character and very friendly!

As an aside have you done Woodside Wildlife Park yet, as that's another nice small collection in Lincolnshire with some interesting species?

I haven’t been to that one. I’ll have to go and have a look - they have wolves which is always a draw. Another for the list! It’s a bit of a journey but it’s more the single track roads (and indeed the pretty bonkers roads along the dykes as you get near the places that have the holes and humps all the way along) that takes the time vs the pure distance.

I also have an EV so Lincolnshire can be a bit of an electric adventure. Found a good charging spot in Boston today.

Shame to hear about the red fox, I think I saw him on my last visit.

Today as confirmed on the park's Facebook page, new extensions have opened for the Bobcats and Anubis the Serval - basically they appear to have added a new pen next to the existing polytunnels for both species and then joined the two. Judging by the pictures on there the new areas are fairly basic but effective and give a lot more space, so definitely a good development! The cats are reportedly already enjoying the extra space.

Had an enjoyable afternoon at Ark wildlife park today (morning at LWP) weather was mixed but rain was light when it did come down. Fair number of visitors but not many left by 330pm feeding time.

The new extensions have doubled the space for the bobcat and serval as mentioned - took a couple of pictures. They are wire and wood and not that high but they have new climbing structures in and are tidy and well finished. Some work was still going on putting up wicker screens between the bobcats and the neighbouring enclosures. Both new enclosures were being well used.

Two raccoon dogs have moved into the enclosure where the two foxes were (near the arctic foxes) and the remaining red / variant foxes are now split between the two enclosures near the lynx. All very active at feeding time. The arctic foxes are in different stages of coat transition so quite a mixed look.

There was a new skunk in the barn (additional to the one near the raccoons) who was signed as recently arrived. All the Macaques were out and with all the enclosures occupied I counted 9.

The jungle cat, caracal and bobcats were very showy which was good.

I don't know if your photos do the cages justice but they look horrendous.
