Marwell Wildlife Marwell Zoological Park 2023

By Aridlands I mean the desert hoofstock house (I still call the mongoose area Desert Carnivores). The agama is still there. There are two more vivariums in the middle between the viewing windows for the two hoofstock areas. The crickets and locusts are in these vivariums.

I could be seeing this completely wrong, but from what I recall - the house is designed so that there are 4[??] separate stalls in all, which are used by either the gazelles or addax, or both on occasion.
So, if - and if - I am thinking correctly, this'd mean that the second and third centre stalls have been converted to vivariums?
If so, that's a lot of space for just insects !
On a separate note, would you happen to know how many tigers there are at Marwell currently?
The app has recently become updated so that it features an 'appy egg trail', for which it provides hints. One hint, which relates to a tiger, states that 'At Marwell there's one named Bagai!'
Though I recall that there were two tigers when I went? And Marwell still notes that they have a pair? Or maybe it is purely for a rhyme scheme, because the hint-poem begins,
"The next egg can be found nearby. // A big cat that will catch your eye." So maybe it's nothing to worry about ...

Visited today. My last visit was at the end of January. Quite a lot of observations from today.

- Cotton topped tamarins are now in Life Among the Trees as well as the lawn next to the hall.
- It looks like the small enclosure in Life Among the Trees is being prepared for something to move into. This is the enclosure near the door next to Marwell Hall that has been obscured for sometime by a display board. The board has been removed, the lights for the enclosure were on. It looks almost ready for something to move in. There are no signs at present. I believe this enclosure held mouse lemurs several years ago before it was hidden away.
- The potoroo have moved to the red panda enclosure. Is this just a temporary measure so there is something there whilst they await new pandas?
- There is a pet travel box in the cusimanse enclosure. Is this crate training in preparation for one or more of them departing?
- I didn't see any ibis or wonga pigeon in the walthrough aviaries and they are no longer mentioned on the signs. Have they left?
- There are now crickets and locusts in Aridlands (exhibits, not an infestation).
- There is a baby sitatunga which I don't believe has been announced. It doesn't look that old as it is very small. It was out and about in their paddock today.
Yes Cotton topped Tamarins have replaced the Black and White Lemurs who have moved into the Lemur Area in the Giraffe house for the time being. The Potoroo are only in the Red Panda area for the time being, there are still Ibis but Marwell no longer holds Wonga Pigeon, Yes Sitatunga born which makes 1.3.1.

Any idea what happened to the pigeons ?

Thanks. I saw the black and white ruffed lemurs in Into Africa. It didn't occur to me at the time that they had moved.

So did you see my post re: Insects etc?

Yes. There are two vivariums between the second and third stalls. That is where the insects are.

Also regarding the questions regarding tigers, I didn't see both today but I have no reason to suspect they no longer have two.

Are the vivariums behind the glass [between the viewer area and the stalls themselves] or in front of it?

They are built into the wall. They have always been there and there have been other things in them previously. In recent times they may have been covered up and hidden whilst not being used.

Do you mean the the former ex-nocturnal exhibit in the World of Lemurs building? Could not relate your reference to "...the door next to Marwell Hall..."

On Sunday it looked like the area for the bush dogs and caracara was still being worked on.

Regarding the avian flu issues, the penguin exhibit had reopened.

Will certainly be interesting to see the two enclosures when finished .. though they said it would be open in early April.
I will say, I personally prefer the aesthetic of bat-eared fox and I also appreciate the fact not many places in the UK seem to have them any more .. so whilst I would have liked to see the foxes return, I recall on most occasions the foxes would be sleeping inside .. so it totally makes sense that if Marwell is to get another dog, it would be a more active, diurnal species which to boot is already quite abundant in the UK to begin with. Though, talking of major zoos, only really Colchester + Chester and a few others have them at the moment .. so mayhaps it could become a similar matter to their clouded leopards, which is nice to see. I welcome their imminent addition. And seeing as both animals for this re-development happen to be South Americans [whichever species of caracara it happens to be] I wonder if this will be used to an interesting degree. More likely anyways than say, an African and a South American species next to each other as before. [Or being pendantic for a short while in 2017 following the ocelot's departure, an Asian species [short-clawed otter] next to an African species]

Some honeyeaters have been hatched some time ago - and have been fledged by some of Marwell's previous chicks. Good news for the only ones on public view in the UK.

If it has taken up to now regarding the construction of the Bush Dog / Caracara enclosures, I'd imagine they'd be rather appealing to look at ...
