Fort Wayne Children's Zoo Fort Wayne Children's Zoo

Some news from today’s visit that I don’t think is in the thread:

The Javan Gibbon exhibit is closed for repairs. This means that only the tigers, clouded leopards, squirrels, one bird species, and the replacement area for Dr. Diversity’s Discovery Center are currently on display in Indonesia.

I was struck by how much smaller the new indoor area seemed than its predecessor. The tree shrew exhibit is fine, but there are fewer terrariums, no indoor Komodo exhibit (or outdoor one at the moment), and none of the interactive displays. I don’t know why they felt compelled to make this change and kind of wish they hadn’t.

The pony area and red panda ridge have been leveled.

The zoo does not have Tasmanian devils at the moment. They were set to import more but the plans were derailed by the pandemic. Uncertain now if or when they will get more.

The zoo feels really empty without its birds. Indonesia is bisected and half-empty. The Australian outback trail only has reptiles, kangaroos, and dingoes. Africa and Central Zoo fare better, but overall the zoo experience was worse than I remembered.

On June 20th, the zoo announced they have opened a new American alligator exhibit in the Center Loop area (In the video they mentioned the exhibit was the former home of something? Maybe @Persephone can help me out with this one).

They made some upgrades to the old alligator exhibit. Wasn’t enough I instantly noticed it tbh. Also I think the land portion might be smaller now? It looks nicer and you can get a view of the land portion from the water side, where before you had to walk along a pathway to see it.

On August 11th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) common ostrich named Penny has been moved back on exhibit in the African Journey area. The zoo also announced they will be reintroducing their birds back into their exhibits slowly.

A piece of 2022 News I have not mentioned:

On January 4th, it was announced that (0.3) eastern grey kangaroos named Blue and Heather (a joey later named Holly was in Heather's pouch) were transferred to Zoo de Grandy in Grandy, Quebec, in late 2021.

On November 18th, it was announced that the zoo transferred (0.3) white-bearded wildebeest to the Caldwell Zoo in Texas.*

Well, they’ve now renovated everything in the Central Zoo except the alligator / tortoise enclosures and the sea lion / penguin area. Curious if they do those or just move on to Indonesia. The pony area being retired makes me think it’s the latter.
