Walrus currently in captivity

The Indianapolis Zoo no longer houses walrus. Their last animals Ginger and Aku, were transferred to SeaWorld Orlando sometime in 2022. This leaves three facilities left in the US that house Walrus: SeaWorld Orlando, SeaWorld San Diego, and the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A December 2022 USDA report for SeaWorld Orlando does not show an increase in Walruses - and Indy's website still claims their two will go back on exhibit this spring. I see Walrus Network lists them at SeaWorld - but the USDA report is contradictory to this. Possibly they moved temporarily and have returned to Indy?

Yes, the Indianapolis Zoo is building a new walrus exhibit opening in spring to early summer of 2023. From what I have heard the Aku and Ginger are still at Orlando but they might have already transferred back to Indy and it just slipped under the radar.

Walrus in Paira Daiza, Belgium.

Does anyone know if this park still hold 6 Walruses? I visited last week and saw 4. Maybe there were two more offshow? Is the calf born there, named Floki, still at the park or has he been moved? I am not sure if I saw him or not as there is absolutely no signage apart from species name...

They're currently housed in two groups -- Tania with Floki, and then Garik, Thor, Frosya, and Ninotska. It sounds like you saw the latter group!

Thankyou. I saw two 'pairs', one on each side(but seperated) in the main exhibit. Garik and Thor (definately males) on one side, and two females in the other. So I guess I didn't see Tania/Floki.. Is there an offshow pool as well?

Do you have photos so we can ID them for you? There is holding space though!

Okay, yes I do. Will try and put them up at some stage. I am now pretty sure the two that I didn't see were Tania/Floki- though one of the two 'females' together was rather smaller than the other. Floki is male right?

Yes, he is But Frosya is also noticably small in comparison to Ninotska

I've got a fairly decent photo of the two 'females' but have problems uploading photo. I will put it on the PD media page when I can. I am certain it was two females on that side (they are very easy to sex..;)) and one was rather smaller than the other. so I strongly suspect it was Ninotska and Frosya that I saw.

At this point I take it that we can confirm that 2.3 walruses are at SeaWorld Abu Dabhi; Boris, Koyuk, Sm**shi, and surprisingly Lilou and Nanoha from Kamogawa SW. It must have been less red tape government wise to bring them to SWAD instead of the US.
Walrus Network - SeaWorld Abu Dhabi
Most of the photos and reels from SW and guests that I’ve seen, have been everyone except Boris.

I'm not sure that is the motivation, they were building a new park and would need to get animals from somewhere?
I think Aelita may be referencing the fact that SeaWorld had initially applied to import Lilou to their San Diego park (this being after construction on Abu Dhabi had started and was already over halfway completed)

Ah, ok, that makes sense :)

Thanks for the photo! Why not open the exhibit and keep seals and walrus together? :) More space for everone.
I agree with this HEAVILY. Now I do not know the inter-species conflict between walrus' and seals but I think they could get together quite swell if given the space. I think the water temperature would be the biggest concern as well as the space for them to lie down. Also the walrus' would be severely outnumbered and that could cause an issue however it is unlikely. I love LOVE this idea and would like to see it. A polar or cold water habitat enclosure with multiple mammals in the enclosure would be a sight I want to see.

Although at Hamburg they co-habit walruses with the South American fur seals and from my observations the seals were harassing the walruses quite severely. But yes not always a good idea.
