Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2023

Long term, work towards building the best bachelor or multigenerational elephant facility on the East Coast.
If this legislation passes, bachelor holding would be the only real option for Bronx, and, to be fair, is a necessity for the SSP as well. With the way most Asian ungulate populations are doing in the AZA right now anyways there's soon to be more space in the Wild Asia Monorail than there are animals, so going all in on elephants may not be the most unrealistic idea, as that's an area of the zoo where a decrease in species diversity will be essentially inevitable while keeping with the Asia theme.

Honestly, if the Bronx could expand the Asian elephant yard a bunch (I say into the babirusa area) and modernize the barn to allow for more flexible rotation, they could TOTALLY be a bachelor home to some bulls.

That's a great idea. Tho ideally, I'd also just make the monorail a walking trail so I can watch them on my own time and make the barn an indoor viewing area

On February 20th, it was reported that the zoo acquired a (0.1) American alligator later named Godzilla after she was rescued from Prospect Park Lake in New York City on February 19th. She was found to have swallowed a bathtub stopper and is currently recovering.

Sadly, Godzilla has passed away.

The Prospect Park Alligator Has Died, Bronx Zoo Says

Do any Bronx Zoo regulars know when the Wild Asia Monorail tends to open for the year? The website only says "May", and am wondering when in May is typical for its opening. I'm visiting the Bronx Zoo in a few weeks and hope that the monorail will be up and running so I can see some of the zoo's rare ungulates.

It opens this Saturday the 29th.

Sometimes they make dates hard to find. This year, the opening date is on the map.

FRP, years past it feels like the Bronx Zoo Monorail usually opens on the same date Run for the Wild is held. This year the trend seems to continue, as Run for the Wild is happening on April 29.

Did they change this date at any point? I could have sworn they announced it as happening on the 15th, while I was in Idaho, which is the sole reason I didn't sign up this year.

I can confirm that the monorail is open and running.

There is also a Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec in Mouse House but its unsigned. I've never seen it before or mentioned so I assume its new?
I also saw them on my most recent visit and the signage had it as a Jird or something (I can’t remember what exactly on the top of my head)

What ungulates didn't you see (I assume there were some absences)?

On the monorail? Saw nearly all of them, except Eld's and Sika. But its difficult for me to identify these from the other species so they may have been out just not possible to distinguish from the large herd.

Eld's would be together with gaur, if they were exhibited at all. Last year they were largely not out. Also, staff use another common name "brow-antlered deer," instead.

The Brow-Antlered Deer are often not on-exhibit, I presume because of Gaur breeding. I don't see them far more than I do.

A couple of highlights from my visit this past weekend:

-The first deer pasture on the monorail was closed due to a fencing issue, meaning the Barasingha, Chital, Bactrian Deer, and Blackbuck were all off-exhibit.
-Taiwan Mountain Viper is now on-exhibit with the new Philippine Pitviper.
-Brongersma's Pitviper is now signed with the Sunda Island Pitvipers
-The Fly River Turtle tank is gone from World of Reptiles. In its place is a new Home's Hingeback Tortoise enclosure.
-Baja Blue Rock Lizard is signed in the Gila Monster enclosure now, with the collared lizard no longer signed.
-The zoo's added virtual signage to the Butterfly Garden which visitors can access with a QR code that shows them an updated species list of butterflies and other animals in the building. Visitors can even mark which species they've seen which I think is a cool feature.
-I noted that some of the cranes and swans have been put back out on-exhibit following a lot hiatus off-exhibit due to HPAI.
-The zoo is incubating Hooded Merganser eggs.
-The zoo had four or five giant sengi on-exhibit, including one quite small animal that's likely a growing youngster.

Is the second floor to World of Birds still closed?

The first pasture has reopened, and the sengi enclosure is now covered in cardboard, probably to give the young animals privacy. And thanks for confirming the hingeback tortoise is Home's :)

Yes.

Yes.

The cardboard was there over the weekend too, but if you stand on the step (or you're super tall ;) ) you can see them.
